@Batman - Just for clarity, the photo that you put up - is that the rear rotor, the one that didn't get replaced?  Or is the front rotor that did get replaced?

Edit: Just re-read the OP - IMO for a "new" rotor it certainly looks very well used...

Longevity wise, it's certainly not going to last as long as a proper brand new rotor (and it likely to chew on brake pads too with that pitting).

Having said that, on the rear it should be quite so bad, assuming your brake balance puts the load on the front and you don't tend to use the ebrake to slow the vehicle down too much ...

Just paint 'em bro

Disclaimer:

DON'T paint them like that ^ you'll end up ruining the brakes and having to replace parts.

I *really* hope that our WOF would fail brakes like that ...

I once had a lady turn up to the workshop with a poorly running and severely smoking engine.  She had just sold the car and was dropping it off, thought she would top up the oil for the new owner.......it was up to the rocker cover.  Local Z station did it for her.....and we undid it....hot oil and a free job for a poor lady, moral: you'd be surprised what people do.

1. rear rotor, new rotor.

2. i ran my hands along the rotor, it is 100% (according to my fingers) flat, no lumps bumps lips indentations, lines etc

3. the front rotors (also as new) does have a few lines like a vinyl record

Well if that's the case, we've been deceived by some optical illusion or whatever, because in the photo of the rear disk you posted - it looked terrible.

Ran my hands along both rear rotors, one of which was pictured in the optical illusion of the decade. Completely smooth.

You win the internet for photography illusion, i would have guessed that melt like the moon. If its flat, it will be OK.

Someone did a photoshop to it. It wasn't the original picture. go back in the thread and see who photoshopped it. Mind you as a purist I would say that the iphone probably had to do some adjustments to produce my original picture, as it looks like a high contrast situation (which any time when the sun is out is a high contrast situation for image sensors - they are very different from the retina in your eyes. I took the photograph to show the rust. the rotors happened to be there, and i don't know what the phone did to the rotors, I didn't really care. But my fingers tell me they're ok.

I remember having this discussion with my father (motor engineer) it is normal no need to worry about it and it's gone 2 seconds after you start driving. Any bare iron in a wet environment and add to that the chemicals coating our roads is going to get surface oxidation and quite quickly. We have two cars, one is one year and the other is four weeks old both will get this surface rust overnight  if I cant be bothered putting them in the garage. If they go into the garage wet it will also occur. By the time we reach teh end of our drive they are all clean.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Can't see much rust on the wear surface of these rotors.

That photo from the internet - but there's a brake shop in Chch (Safe R Brakes IIRC) where they've got a large collection of similar and worse pulled from customer's cars, on display in their front office/customer service area. Most brake workshops will have seen similar.
