I personally think they are a great idea and yes there will be some issues with safety etc but overall its great for Auckland

I hope they stay and expand!

I just hired one at lunchtime as it was sunny and I had nothing better to do...

Took it from lower Albert St (Auckland), along the waterfront using the cycle lane to Mechanics Bay, turned around and came back again.

Mostly, it was topped out at 25.4 km/h, but slowed right down on slight slopes (like at the end of the cycle path) and sped right up going down the same slope on the way back (got up to 30 km/h).

My real worry is that despite being an experienced bicycle and motorcycle rider and having a push scooter of my own, the stability at speed is poor - even for an experienced rider.

Going over bumps in the road that you don't see results in some nervy moments and those without the experience of what to do will inevitably go over the handlebars at some point. I could see my wife doing that.

They're either on or off, too - there's no gentle half-measures with the power. That's not ideal.

Total distance covered - 4km. Total time - 16min. Total cost - $4.80 (inclusive of a $1.00 discount code).

Quite expensive, but good fun for a short while. Not something I'll do regularly, but I did enjoy it.

Cher! A shame they give three $1 vouchers not one $3 voucher, but so be it.

Interesting to read your comments re stability etc, so it’ll be good to try one out before I commit much more money to actually buying one.

Do you think it’s appropriate to wear a helmet when riding such a scooter? May look somewhat plonkery but I guess that’s nothing if it mitigates head injury.

25 is pretty close to the max these things do, they don't really get up there unless going full speed on a flat or downhill. If he was weaving properly then he was def doing less than 25.

Surely the point here is not the precise speed, but that weaving through pedestrians at speed is unsafe and inconsiderate.

I suppose with Taubins comment yes, if the rider is being a moron then it is unsafe.

Then again these people would do it with bikes or skateboards anyway. It's the person not the equipment.

It'd be a shame to see them removed, they seem to be quite popular for getting around quickly to places without waiting for a bus or where buses can't go.

Often I see negative opinions come from people who have never ridden them or know how to in the first place and will only regard them as a nuisance.

Same perspective against motorcyclists, in fact I've heard the same thing as your reply in regards to that except that its legal for them to do so.

Yes.... especially if you are going anywhere near places with lots of people/cars/ other moving objects- if you come off at 10K+ you are gonna feel it....

in fact when you hire a lime, I think one of the check boxes is that they recommend a helmet, (mind you who actually reads EULAs)

I was at Madills Farm and Kohimarama Beach area yesterday and there were kids of all ages screaming around the footpaths on them.

There will be broken bones before too long no doubt.

They don't work for Lime, they are independent "contractors" like Uber drivers

You sign up to be a lime "juicer" and download an app, you can then go out gathering up scooters after a certain time, ( in the US it was 9pm) Lime pays you to charge them up and deliver them back to designated "lime hub" locations fully charged by 7am....

Apparently its a reasonably profitable "side hustle" in some US cities... but I can't help think that eventually lime will do an Uber and cut the rates it pays out....

There also are some Reddit posts. For one commenter, the grimyness of the scooters certainly was a factor.

I was in the US last week and used these in quite a few places. I also saw the juicers at work in the evening in San Diego where there are literally thousands and thousands and thousands of scooters across 4-5 brand operating there.

You've got lots of people out there collecting the scooters in pickup's as well as cars and simply cramming the things in. I saw a car with scooters hanging out the boot (which wouldn't close) as well as the rear and passenger seat windows.

It would seem right now the juicers are the only ones making money!

Would be interesting to actually run some numbers on that.

I'd expect that in many cases, the juicers may think they're making money - but more likely will be mis-costing and probably costing themselves money instead. i.e. costings for :-

Their time for all the below (very rarely costed)
- + any helpers (often two guys, one driving and one grabbing the scooters)
Mileage picking these things up (they could end up anywhere)
- measured from home point and driven in a non-linear fashion
- gas even in the US is pricey (ier than it used to be)
Wear and tear on vehicles - throwing dirty scooters into a car (and filling haphazardly as mentioned)
- damages + insurance (is this use even covered in consumer policies?)
- also what happens if a scooter has been damaged/hot wired - do juicers still get paid for juicing them?
Power consumption (+ potentially time spent plugging/unplugging etc)
Mileage delivering back to central points
Mileage back home after delivery

Even just on vehicle consumption costs alone it could well be un-economic.

Agree with the cost of juicing, particular using motor vehicle.

Reading about the juicers on reddit, I can't help but think that a cargo bike (e-bike or just pedal) would be the way to go with juicing. You could probably stack 10 in a decent cargo bike, and with a bike you can easily access the CBD locations with poor car parking where the scooters are likely to be
