Sometimes I wish that essentials are Govt controlled and owned and non profit. Capitalism is great if it earns, it innovates, but not if it uses

Except that the government cant even make proper decisions around what should and should not be regulated. And they almost always stuff up the things that they do regulate.

EG we still have regulated copper landlines. Which only serve to leach money that could be better spent on expanding the UFB network or cellphone coverage.

Low user regulations for electricity pricing. Cheaper power for holiday homes, while lots of low income families are forced to pay more for their power.

Resource Management act/ council planning rules. Councils prioritize what they regard as “good urban design” over providing affordable housing. In reality that means houses with large front yards and tiny back yards. No privacy, nowhere for little kids to play outside without worrying about them being able to run onto the road.

The fuel taxes are bad enough, due to them hurting low income people more than high income earners. If the government tried to implement other fuel price regulations. I hate to think how badly they would stuff things up.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Ok, let the Govt back out of most regulation and let the market manage everything. If each Government we have and all or most or some Councils cannot manage regulation, then what do we do? I'd say that is most cases there is not enough funds so we cant have everything

The less government interferes with private fuel stations (private businesses) the better.

As @sbiddle has written about on numerous occasions: severely restrict the discount schemes (i.e.maximum of 4cpl) which would (or at least should) have the effect of evening out petrol pricing nationwide as profits won't need to be gouged from one area to make up for shortfalls in another. Seems to have worked reasonably well in Australia.

Fair enough. Time to close this thread as the answer to price changes is the obvious exchange rate issues, plus local market forces, and market forces are ok, which must included rorting and collusion and psuedo cartel behaviour? Market forces should cause competition to keep prices down, but it can also be used by the players to keep them up. So, we should accept that if this is the case?

For those who are dubious about my claims they deliberately increase prices in the hopes their competitors do the same - BP leaked memo confirms they 100% do precisely that.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/103470616/behind-the-pricing-internal-email-lifts-veil-on-bps-petrol-prices

But instead of cutting prices in Ōtaki, BP pricing manager Suzanne Lucas outlined a novel tactical plan: raise prices in the whole area, and hope that BP's major rivals responded by doing the same thing.

"Rather than just reducing the price in Ōtaki we will be looking to increase the price at Paraparaumu & Kāpiti and also Levin," Lucas wrote.

"We have already increased all three sites mentioned by 5cpl [cents per litre] and have found that the Z [Energy station] in Paraparaumu has already matched our pricing.

They do game the prices, knowing their partners will match their higher prices.

I saw a post this morning from Gull with their Wellington expansion plans, new unmanned stations in: Upper Hutt, Wingate, 30 Waione St Petone and Paraparaumu. Petone to be open by the end of the year.

So the 2 Waitomo stations are going to be open well before Gull so hopefully that will force some price drops around the region

Christchurch today.   BP at 230.9 for 91 octane.   Diesel 173.9   So that may be equalling the record set last year.

Knew it had gone up a few times this week; locally Z seems to be the one leading the charge with the rest following over the course of the day

As per normal, Dunedin is following the "national price" and is currently $2.309 for 91

Noticed once day that the price had gone from $2.239 at 7pm to $2.269 at 7am the next morning and then I guess they decided 3c wasn't enough as by 7pm it was $2.279

Still got a few more cents before we hit the records - it got to $2.489 in Dunedin in October 2018, just before I headed to Europe
