Some dealers can be a bit more sympathetic towards the end of month IF they have met their monthly targets.

I do agree that if you can get an ex demo go for it but if you are going to keep the vehicle longer than 5-6 years then haggle on for a new vehicle.

Good luck.

I think you have misunderstood my post as these comments seem to be directed at mine.

No not at all. I was writing my post when you posted so did not see your post till after I had posted.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Be aware that mid next year the RAV4 will get an update, and I’m being led to believe the price will go up, but then I’ve never heard a sales guy say the prices will go done. I’m also not convinced the hybrid is all that yet - $5k extra for a system where the petrol engine kicks in nearly all the time isn’t worth it, and nobody can tell me what Toyota NZ’s policy of battery refurbishment is or how much it will cost.

there doesn’t seem to be much of a national conversation around recycling lithium batteries, and given the mission it is to get them to NZ, maybe there’s an opportunity for something domestically?

Anyway, critical for us is support for CarPlay and android auto - it really does make a difference compared to using the native infotainment system. Toyota want $500 to retrofit it to current models, although it’s standard in new models. Mazda has had it native for years.

The sticker price may not change, but the attitude of the sales rep and what they will do for you matters too. I don’t like it when people get paid just for being order takers on transactions of this magnitude.

I thought the RAV4s (as like most [all?] Toyota hybrids) used NiMH batteries, not lithium? (This doesn't take away from the point re battery replacement/recycling.)

I noticed RAV4 has wireless charging, does it support wireless Android auto?

Only the GXL model and above has wireless charging. Currently the RAV4 sold in NZ do not have Android Auto or Car Play installed. The sales rep advised me that only the Hybrid model and above will be getting Car Play/Android Auto next year.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Can't you just order them online and avoid the dealer. That should also be a saving for the retailer. I remember when looking at the 86, that I believe had to be ordered through their website, but then there is no room to negotiate. Normally when retailers have set prices, they will have sales from time to time.

I thought some of the newer hybrids allowed you to choose if you want to run on electricity, and you only use petrol when your batteries are low. Teslas have changed electric cars, because they tend to have good ranges, far enough not to usually require a petrol backup engine. I thought there had been an EV version of the RAV 4 for many years overseas. So what makes this 2020 one so different unless it was a proper EV vehicle .

Wow. No Android auto/car play on most models. That's crap. I was looking at Honda jazz a few years ago and had to give it a miss because it didn't do Android auto at the time.

billgates: Congrats @allio

Is there any wait for the GX 2.0 Petrol model at your dealership? The Hamilton dealership I visited had sold out of both GX 2.0 Petrol and Hybrid variant and new stock was not due until Feb 2020. I do like that Toyota includes both front and back seat mats and capped service pricing on all their new cars.

Yep, bit of a wait, but won't find out until later this week exactly how long. There is a chance we will get it Dec/Jan but they couldn't rule out Feb.

Re: Android Auto/Carplay - I'm feeling a bit annoyed about this now. Google it and you get this article from May which specifically says the current RAV4 will get the upgrade. I was also told (unprompted) at the dealership that the RAV4 GX will get the upgrade (and in fact there is a chance that it may already have been installed once our vehicle arrives - otherwise it will be retrofitted for a fee). But I also emailed Toyota, and just got this reply (after we'd already ordered the car):

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto has recently been released in our new generation Toyota Corolla Wagon, and will be standard in the new C-HR Facelift and Hybrid models being released this month.  Within the next two years, we expect most of our new vehicle line-up will get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.   We are also hoping to make available a retrofit accessory upgrade for some current models.  Further information, including compatibility and pricing will be announced in early 2020.

I.e. we're not committing to anything.

So I'm not sure what the truth is. I'm hoping the salesperson you spoke to was wrong, and the one I spoke to was right. Not a dealbreaker in any case but I will feel actively misled if I can't get Android Auto even for a fee.
