Back to the 1960s, when near-new secondhand cars sold for more than new cars, because of the length of the waiting list (and the requirement for overseas funds).
Not only back in the 60s. I was at a Toyota dealer having my car serviced and was wandering around their used car yard. There was a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid with 20000km and the window ticket had $55K on it which is the price of a new (2021) one. That model was sold at $49K in 2019 and when I pointed that out to the salesperson they said “Yes, but you’ll have to wait 6 months for a ew one”.
