"From memory" as I wasn't aware of a few apps that I am now aware off.

Was at 95% when I picked up the car
41-61% at Tirau (ChargeNet)
~32- 90% at Taupo (SuperCharger) (Auckland to Taupo was "doable" without any stops but I didn't want to risk it)
? - 90% at Magnaweka (SuperCharger)
? - 90% at Johnsonville (SuperCharger)
Attempted a topup in Blenheim (ChargeNet) but it was a fail - in 33 minutes, gained 5% (was freezing and wasn't able to precondition the car)
40-80% at Kaikoura (ChargeNet)
22-95% at Christchurch (SuperCharger)
? - 90% at Timaru (SuperCharger)
23-61% at Dunedin (ChargeNet) (someone else was waiting so I let them have it)

Can't really remember the percentages that I arrived at some of the SuperChargers, though I suspect it was somewhere in the 30% range as I was going to charge in Amberley before getting to Christchurch, but the car said I would make it with 25% and I decided it was worth the risk. I learnt never to take a cold car and try to charge - the trip to the Blenheim charger was a waste of time and $9.

Can you explain this a bit more? Does it mean that the car is near impossible to charge if the ambient temperature is below a certain level? If so, how cold are we talking?

No, the car isn't near impossible to charge, it's just slower while it takes some of the power from the charger to try to warm the pack for optimal charging. On a 50kW charger you will likely only be charging at around 37kW in that condition. In the US and Europe this isn't really an issue as Tesla has the third party chargers on the charging map so the car can pre-condition on the way to the charger so it doesn't need to do that while also trying to charge - like it does with a Supercharger. This hasn't been done in NZ yet whether it be due to Tesla NZ not doing it, ChargeNet not wanting to add it to the car or some combination of both parties.

This! Why I won’t yet consider an EV, I don’t have the patience (but good on those who do).

Keep in mind that this was @nzkiwiman first time driving his EV from one end of the country to the other. I'm sure as he gets more comfortable with the car many of those charge stops could be eliminated.

When I drove my Long Range from Auckland to just south of Christchurch I had one charging stop in Taupo and another short stop in Kaikoura. I stayed the night in Wellington so the car fully charged while I slept in the Hotel.

John Fitness just had his Guinness record verified for doing Cape Reinga to Bluff in 6 charges in a SR+ model 3, this is overly cautious!

Yes its only for tesla vehicles.

The difference is they are only for tesla vehicles. They are currently 120kw instead of most of the rest at 50kw.

Model 3's have CCS2 ports that can use all the 3rd party chargers also.

Old model S sometimes have the free charging, no NZ model 3's do.

Charging cost is variable depending on the charger, with tesla SC its 50c-75c per kwh or so, with chargenet its 25c per kwh plus 25c per minute.

To be fair, Auckland to Dunedin is a three day drive. I know very little about Teslas, or electric vehicles in general, but I'm guessing you could probably get this down to six charges en route - i.e. two charges per day of driving. I don't think it's a major inconvenience.

Hey thanks that's helpful.

I've just realised that the 4 tesla models spell this

S 3 X Y

It is rumoured that there is a Model A and a Model F in the pipeline 😆.

First you dont really ever charge 0-100% on a public charger, usually 5-15% to 80% max.

At 50c per kwh it would be $35 for 70kwh , usual 10-80% would be $24.50

For chargenet it varies but on their 50kw chargers 10-80%, so say 50kw over 1 hour = $27.50 ($15 time, $12.50 energy)

I've never paid for supercharging tho because of referral kms.

Note fast charging is the exception, everyone charges at home much cheaper.

I start the day with 100% at $0.12 per kwh so $8.40 or so

BuzzLightyear:

Yeah, I would have brought a long range if it happened to be $79,999.

yup. and don't tell me they don't know about this annoying little fact.

also while other dealers are willing to "hack" the purchase price by way of trade-ins (not sure if that's successful or not, the waka website doesn't mention anything - just the final purchase price), i asked Tesla and they said trade ins appear as deposit on the invoice and they will not alter the purchase price.
