Are you certain it's the fuel level gauge you're reading, not some other fuel economy gauge that's dropping quickly due to short trips and cold starts?

Our hybrid (Honda Fit) was our first exposure - had no idea what to expect so thought it was normal. Turns out it has 60 fuses in it, When they were all tested, #53 was gone. When that was replaced, found another problem (forget the details now).
A couple of subsequent trips have produced 18-20+ km/l/. Our normal is 14-15 - we live near a city and up 1km from the flat area.
So there are two different factors.

Eva888: Surely that’s not correct. That means I can go Wellington to Cambridge in the Waikato which is 498 km on what’s left in the tank? I can barely go to the supermarket twice a few kms away without it going down by a quarter tank. Bewildering.

My CX-5 can do 500km on a tank for highway driving, so it's definitely achievable on a hybrid.

Since you've largely ruled out a leak, it sounds like it's a quantity indication problem. I had something similar on an old Mazda 626 many years ago.

Definitely the fuel gauge, I’m not great with interpreting the features but I know what a petrol gauge looks like.

seems like normal behaviour https://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/107703-fuel-gauge-behaviour/

"It certainly does drop quick. You can see it move as you're driving. Seems odd to me."

"Thanks. I've now reverted to looking at range rather than the gauge."

Batman:

Eva888: And this

I don’t understand what I’m reading, but it’s as if suddenly those levels have risen in the last trips.

some hybrids have a "performance" mode where it mainly runs on petrol,

and an "eco" mode where is mainly runs on battery

and "auto" - car decides what to do

does your car have these modes?

It has a dial with Eco, Normal and Sport. I’ve been driving it in Eco and then Normal going up the hill. Hardly dared to use Sport. Am very light on the pedal and let it cruise with foot off gas quite often. My driving is always within the low economy range which made it even more difficult to understand as was making a special effort to improve the result. Not enjoying it at all.

Wow, that sounds exactly like mine. So what do they mean to just use range?

This is an entirely silly and irrelevant point without .mentioning the expected milage for the vehicle under discussion is somewhere round 1300km for 60 litres of petrol. Eva888 will get 500km further than your vehicle for the same $90 worth of petrol.

We've also just bought a CT200h a month ago and so far it's been fantastic. We're getting 5L/100km or 20km/L which is pretty good considering my wife has the heater blasting, heated seats on and with it being winter it's taking longer for the car to get up to operating temperature. These things do only have a small petrol tank so I'd be more concerned by the fuel economy figures than how quickly the fuel guage is going down.

Good to hear from someone else with a similar car. Have you noticed the fuel gauge dropping as you drive also? I’m still unsure if it’s problematic or not. Seems mine is not as efficient as yours as it shows about 15km/L even with purposely not using heaters and careful driving. Not enjoying driving this way but trying to rule out a heavy gas foot causing it.

Was nervous to tinker with the settings in case I scrubbed the information but now have photos for comparison. I need to figure out how to reset all the counters and then top it up with gas and begin from there to get an accurate reading before I take it in to be checked. Also want to photograph the gauge each time I use the car to record the drop.

Just hold down the 'disp' button on the steering wheel for 2 or 3 seconds and it'll reset whatever info you have on the small screen next to the speedo. Also, if yours is an import I highly recommend you change the pop up screen in the middle of the dash to English.
