The article from afe66 article is interesting, but it is an opinion piece.

The quote comes from Wood Mackenzie, whose primary business is oil & gas industry research.

However they have, like most in the oil industry, acknowledge climate change exists.

I know it's an opinion piece but I found it interesting the point about refining capacity which is something I hadn't seen other commentators mention in comparison to many many articles about raw material supplies.

Its not seen as a  tier one problem because it is solvable with money and time... you can build refineries pretty easily .... the technology exists, they are typically above ground and it is an established framework to build them-  Its easy to invoke national security and have a government say "built me a lithium refinery"

Raw materials involve finding stuff under the ground, and then getting them out... its a much bigger dice roll, and it makes the risks much higher...and it becomes a balance between risk and reward... governments can look a bit stupid saying  "find me a cheap supply of  raw lithium in this part of the world"

afe66: "china now possesses about 90 percent of global capacity to process raw lithium, about 70 percent of cobalt and 40 percent of nickel. China also has almost all the manganese- and graphite-refining capacity."

Those stats are arguable, but taking those as given for the moment. There are numerous competing technologies in development that require much less raw material, or use different material entirely. Covid related supply disruptions have already boosted those. Imo this is a fear rather than any kind of likely scenario.

How Removing Cobalt From Batteries Can Make EVs Cheaper

CNBC

Cobalt has been getting a lot of attention lately because it is one of the most expensive materials found in lithium-ion batteries, which power everything from laptops and cell phones to electric vehicles.

Cobalt extraction is largely concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it is linked to human rights abuses and child labor, while cobalt refinement is almost exclusively done in China, making cobalt part of a tenuous supply chain.

These are some of the reasons why battery manufacturers like Samsung and Panasonic and car makers like Tesla and VW, along with a number of startups are working to eliminate cobalt from lithium-ion batteries completely.

Tesla is seeking to install a 6 bay Supercharger site in Turangi...but the local council is doing what local councils do best and getting in the way with baseless claims.

I like the Tesla forward thinking approach with 6 charging bays.  Other fast chargers can only charge 1 car at a time and if you get there to see a car charging and another 2 cars waiting to charge - you are in for a long wait.  The fear of having to wait hours to charge an EV can really slow down uptake of EVs.  It would be good if the idiots on the council in Turangi were to extract their heads from the orifices they are stuck in and see the future coming.

What claims are the baseless claims?

As far as I can tell from the article, some of the everyone who currently bypasses the town altogether to go to Taupo to charge might arrive and find all the chargers in use and then leave the town again straight away, and therefore they should not have the chargers to make sure that all of the everyone who currently bypasses the town, continues to bypass the town. And if you can't see how this is just common sense then that's on you, obviously.

  • "I don't really think we need six" - Based on what?
  • "Six is obviously over the top" - Based on what projection?
  • "They are pretty ugly looking things and I think if we are going to do it that should be a stipulation." - Beauty is in the beholder, but let's remember, it's a car park in Turangi. Car parks are ugly
  • "I do see Teslas around now but I wonder if it's a stage thing - if we go for two or four and see how it goes. That might be a bit more palatable." - Again, based on what projections?

The council never made those claims. They were the thoughts of one councillor that have been reported.

Based on what? I'd based on his observations where he has never see more than one or two Tesla's in town at the same time. I'd say a short sighted observation but not baseless never the less. There's several Tesla charging stations at Te Awa and I've never seen a Tesla using any of them. Based on my observations I could be justified in saying they were a waste of underground spaces. I suspect they're not.

Ugly? Once again, one persons thoughts. As you say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Whether or not it's in Turangi or anywhere else or that it's in a car park the locals have a right to have a say on what they'd like to see.

Baseless claims? I don't really see any and certainly none from the council. Their concerns were about the location within the car park.
