WyleECoyoteNZ:

The Government Giveth, The Government taketh....

From the link below:

"The New Zealand Ministry for the Environment has today announced that it is seeking consultation from the public on a proposal to charge electric vehicle buyers a fee to handle the process of recycling a vehicle’s batteries once they’ve run their course"

https://www.autocar.co.nz/kiwi-ev-buyers-could-pay-mandatory-fee-over-battery-disposal/

Which course though? Car batteries will end up with a second life as house batteries. So we are probably talking end of life after about 30 years.

Do they charge regular car buyers for the actual cost of recycling a car? In as much as that is possible.

Cars just end up being trashed and not actually recycled. Which I guess is true for a lot of the parts of a BEV as well, but certainly not the battery.

Indeed. I intend make my own submission along these lines. I'm not opposed to the general principle they are attempting to enact - and I even understand why they'd prefer to do it before batteries are a problem - but anything that discourages uptake is an own goal at this early stage so if we're going to put recycling costs onto EVs then we need to make ICE vehicle environmental costs increase to match.

I mean personally I think we should have a recycling bounty paid at sale on everything, along with longer warranties, rights to repair, parts supply and open sourcing parts/designs once out of production etc.

But ffs lets kick oil and gas out first.

Tell your inquisitive friend that my friend told me oil used to free to recycle as the recycler makes money selling the re-refined oil.

These days there is a fee for disposing of the consumables used in servicing a car. It's either hidden in the service cost or it's itemised on the account. Just like most tyre retailers do when you get new tyres.

Obraik:

It's a dissapointing week when it comes to councils. Despite the recommendations of their own report to approve the request, the New Plymouth council has voted against granting permission to Tesla to install a Supercharger site (along with a generic charger) at the proposed sites.

Not surprised. The fossil fuel industry is big in New Plymouth. Try a nearby smaller town.

Not a lot of oil industry links in the NPDC so far as I'm aware but more likely cause is the amount of fossils on that Council.

It seems the Council has decided that their ratepayers will be paying for an EV charging facility that Tesla was proposing to pay for: https://www.npdc.govt.nz/media/rjcdjzve/strategy-and-operations-committee-minutes-16-november-2021.pdf (Item #4)

Mitsi are putting up the price of the new outlander PHEV, granted its a better car, but newer typically is... even with the 5K govt discount, still a nearly $20K jump for the top spec..

When launched in 2020 it was

"$52,490 for the XLS and $57,990 for the top spec VRX featuring leather upholstery and an electric sunroof as standard."
https://www.autotrader.co.nz/blog/2020-mitsubishi-outlander-phev-review/

For the 2022 edition we now have

"The LS will initially be available for a special launch price of $59,990 ($54,240 once the Clean Car Discount is applied), but will go up to $69,990 after the launch period.

The XLS costs $75,990, while the VRZ will land at $79,990. All models come with an 8-year/160,000km battery warranty.
