Hasn’t the Minister of Finance ‘Granted’ (pun intended) himself an extra billion dollars to tackle climate change? So if the feebate legislation hasn’t passed by 1 April then they may be able to dip into that. I don’t think it will be required though unless Ute drivers in NZ stage a coup!

It doesn't need any more funding (Yet) its got a $300 million loan from the Govt that Ute owners will pay back in the future

https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/hansard-debates/rhr/document/HansS_20210624_051180000/7-question-no-7-transport

Hon MICHAEL WOOD: The scheme is designed to be a fiscally neutral scheme, funded through a $300 million repayable loan from the Crown, and it has been structured in such a way that the scheme pays out and brings in income within the confines of that structure. It is not our expectation that that fund will run out anytime soon.

The bolded needs correcting as the way you've written it is misleading. Ute Owners won't specifically be funding the rebate, high emission vehicles will be. Not all utes will face the emissions fee. Vehicles like Range Rovers and other large high value SUVs that have high emissions will have the full effect of the fee. Furthermore, owners of said vehicles won't be funding it, only buyers will be.

National has done a lot of harm by lying about the emissions penalties. Yet another reason I can never vote for them. Dishonest and reliably so.

If you are going to bring politics into it please give evidence.

My original comment was light-hearted. Maybe people need to revisit their sense of humour.

Evidence? Daily news. Check it out. I can't compensate for your lack of attention to current affairs across the past several years. Sorry.

National oppose anything intended to *actually* reduce emissions, including the Clean Car Standard . Their record there could not be more clear. I'm sorry you missed it. All of it.

Shindig:

I'm really liking the EV6 from Kia! Thanks for posting out the video, its worth a watch.

Can't wait to test drive one!

The EV6 amd the Ionic 5 are the two EVs that I would be interested in. I actually sat in an Ionic 5 last weekend when I was at a Kia dealer but I didn't ask for a test drive because I would just make myself very annoyed that I would love the car but can't justify buying one.  It does have a really cool space age dash - which is much better than the Tesla Mode 3 in my view and was very spacious.

"Why should it copy other ute designs, why can't they reinvent from scratch?"

I think the US "truck"(i.e. ute) market is conservative and consequently wedded to ther idea of V8s and a particular shape of vehicle. If Tesla can win in that market with the Cybertruck, they can win anywhere.

Perhaps not using a century old chassis/cab, layout and motive power has a potential for some improvements?

There's a reason that the century old chassis/cab hasn't been changed in a 100 years though - it works.

Not sure about you, but I am quite certain that if I suggested to my better half that we spend ~80k on a new sedan, then wanted to put a dead animal in the boot and two grubby wet dogs on the back seat, my life expectancy would diminish significantly.

Happy to be proven wrong, but I very much doubt we'll see many cybertrucks sold here in NZ. Of course there will be a few, probably brought by the same people who currently have an H2 or a F250, but the average farmer, for whom the ute is a tool not a fashion accessory, is going to scoff at its size and impracticality. Then walk down to the next dealer and buy a Ranger/hilux/dmax etc.

Well I think we'll see more cybertrucks than f150's if they are sold, I know people with multiple3 orders in for them.

Still dont know if they will be sold here or not tho, and yes they are larger than the standard ute we buy here.

So no evidence immediately to hand you can “actually” point to. Got it. Opinion as fact.

Edit: And to be clear, my only problem with the feebate scheme is the “let them all drive Ladas” price cap to get the rebate.

Pulled into the BP at Warkworth just now for 5 minutes of charging if possible (have been to Glen Eden and back, then to Warkworth for the supermarket, in our aging Leaf) while getting sushi and ice creams. A Dodge Ram towing a caravan the size of a small corporate headquarters was parked three quarters of the way across the EV charging space and a Toyota Generic was in front of it. We pulled nose in almost touching them and start to stretch out the cable to start charging. My wife pointed the space out to Old White Ram Man who asked "Well where should I park then?". She proceeded to list: 5m backwards from where you are, keep going forwards another 10m where you have to go to leave anyway, and two other places he could've stopped. He told her she should "watch what she says" and she told him if he wasn't able to drive with a trailer on perhaps he should let someone else drive for him.

More reasonable Generic driver moved forward a couple of metres and then she actually pulled nose in between them. When I returned with the sushi to wait for her to get the ice creams I just keep watching Old White Ram Man with a sarcastic smile. She got back a minute later and we left. Honestly I was tempted to just sit in the car and eat the sushi but he clearly wasn't going anywhere in a hurry so all that would've achieved would be some sort of variation on "see, those EVs are useless, look how long they've been sitting there" without any self-awareness of how long he had been sitting there too...

So was the Ram white or the man?

The reason I ask is because one of the options is against Geekzone FUGs.

Note, he was being a self entitled idiot though.

The Ram was black. But I also should've added "Sexist" to 100% complete the fit to stereotype, judging by the "you should watch what you say" comment.

Well I say that but he also had a handbag dog so maybe he was just confused about self image.
