it depends. if you know that it's impossible to find a park and you really want a park right then, it could be worth it.

afe66: If the car was fully charged as per the owners instructions. Ie 85% or 100% after 10 minutes which you can see on front on charging machine. Eg charge net machine was flashing disconnect and showed it had only charged for 10 minutes.

Then owner should return and move it to one of the non charging parks. Not charge for 10 then sit here for 50 minutes blocking the park for other EVs while also not paying for a normal parking spot 20m away..

Chargenet machines have app that tells you your state of charge in real time and can txt you when full to return to your car

Also, when they stop, you can simply unplug them and plug yourself in. I did it yesterday - another Leaf was plugged in at a ChargeNet charger, owner was in the supermarket. When the charger stopped, I just unplugged it and plugged us in. No drama. What they should do is keep charging the per/minute fee if you remain plugged in after they stop...

Only with Type 1 or Chademo. Type 2 / Type 2 CCS is locked in by the vehicle and won't release until the vehicle says so (usually unlocking the car or similar).

Did you look at the actual results and user experience of the day, given that 1 of the 3 stations were closed and there was only 25% attendance due to covid? Or are you just here for the memes and bs?

I don't recall what happens with DC. It should always release when not charging since there's no reason to lock a cable you don't own.

Do they keep charging the per-minute fee for CCS chargers that remain connected even after they've stopped? Because that seems fair then ... if you want to needlessly tie up the charger at least you can pay for the privilege.

It's up to the car maker as to how that works. Tesla for instance holds the port locked until the car is unlocked, no matter if it's finished charging or not. This is probably a hold over from other markets where adapters are regularly used and if the port unlocked automatically you'd lose your adapter if someone unplugged you.

Not sure if chargenet carry on the per min fee if you've finished charging

As I said, it's for AC charging where you may be using your own cable. Good EVs provide the auto unlock option.

Shame there isnt any cheap used evs around or even some subsidies...

It's not so much about the cost of the vehicle or whether or not the government is going to give you a handout to get one - it's much more about the fact that there aren't any viable alternatives to the work vehicles that many New Zealander's need to do their job every day.

The example I mentioned above for instance - There is no alternative available right now to replace a 79 Series Land Cruiser. No EV has a payload of 1t and a towing capacity of 3.5t. There's nothing available with the ground clearance or the WAF to put animals (dead or alive) on the back. In regards to your (ack sarcastic) point about cost - a '79 series will set you back around $80k - if you can get one. The last shipment to NZ sold out and they are on back order, with some second hand vehicles going for more than new price just so people can get one. People have no issue spending money on the right tool for the job.

I acknowledge that there are vehicles in concept/design phases that may fill this spot, however none are in production or available here in NZ right now. The first company who can sell and support an EV Hilux / Ranger / Triton etc will have tradies and cockies beating a path to their door. The cybertruck might be able to do that if it gets here, the F150 Lightning is another contender however we've agreed before that they are both marginally larger than the traditional NZ ute. That may have some bearing on uptake.

Until then - yes, people do still have liters and will continue to do so for a long time yet. The range of EVs available in NZ are perfect for those urban-dwelling office workers (of which a much higher percentage of NZ is now than used to be) but they are not in any position to displace a significant proportion of our fleet.

I don't think we'll see the F150 Lightning here but rather a Ranger that has a drive train based on that from the F150 Lightning.

Most tradies won't be looking for a ute though, they'll be looking for a van.

Plenty of EV vans available in the world now, but utes get FBT and can be weekend fun cars for the alpha male accountants.
