KiwiME:

Working with legislators is a far better look than making idle threats and Suzuki should know better. Our market is perfect for their economical yet slightly technologically-dated cars.

They Tried that, it didn't change anything, so they are now trying to use public opinion ...

the Clean car legislation has just come back from Select committee basically unchanged ( save for some minor changes)

https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/bills-and-laws/bills-proposed-laws/document/BILL_115766/tab/reports

Parliament can often be very tone deaf to the views of industry when they are trying to do something they see as "right" or "righteous"

A recent example was the Credit contract changes that were passed to  hammer shonky high interest lenders/ loan shops and Truck operators....

Despite warnings from  Banks through the consolation process that the law needed to be more specific,  it got passed as drafted,  and its now catching out mortgage applicants spending "too much" at the supermarket, or on netflix or .......

Government is supposed to take the peoples interests and long term prosperity into account, not so much businesses.

Seems like the public opinion option is failing for Suzuki here.

I have little sympathy for Suzuki or Isuzu's position on this. As the anti-woke crowd love to say when they're justifying why they don't need to do anything, New Zealand is a drop in the ocean - but in fact other much bigger markets are getting significantly tougher more quickly than New Zealand. Throwing a tantrum about NZ's new regulations just looks silly when you compare it to the EU, for example ... and if you can't meet NZ's standards you won't be able to sell to the 300M+ people in the EU either.

Ultimately of course the entire Toyota group bet heavily against EVs and now that it looks like they lost they're doing their damnedest to stem the losses by lobbying rather than admitting their mistake and getting up to speed. Yes, there are announcements of EVs coming out of the group now, but they feel quite grudging when you compare them to what the more enthusiastic older players like VW are supplying. Let alone the hungry newcomers like Tesla, Rivian, or a thousand Chinese companies.

I would have really loved a fully electric WRX but I fear that opportunity has gone.

Yeah, well, after diesel-gate, enthusiastic support for EVs was really the only way back from the wilderness wasn't it? :-)

Oof, according to NZ Herald, the AA is predicting that petrol will hit $3/L by the end of the year. Pretty glad I'm paying $3 for my weekly 250km commute rather than the $55 I'd be paying with petrol at that price for an equivilent car.

$150 for a fill up of 91 with a 50l tank :O, I think I used to put in around 55l last full petrol car.

I'd get about 105km on the cost of that litre of fuel.

Yeah this Christmas since the Leaf is no longer capable of making it through some of the hairier sections we drove the ICE from Warkworth to Eltham ... ouch. About $300 in fuel altogether for the trip.

$300?! That's like half of what I've spent charging my car over the last 46,000km I've driven it.

Same, only spent $380.99 on charging on my EV in 3.5 years!
