Unlikely to happen here in NZ where we have first world things like Warrants of Fitnesses that catch that sorta stuff.

Once it hits 3 years old. That's a lot of driving without a brake pad. You'd just about get away with it on some EVs, depending on regen strength.

AFIk any imported car, new or old has to go through an inspection here that would pick this up.

Really shouldnt have been missed by the factory tho.

The one being sold in NZ is the runout model isn’t it?

The next generation one seems quite a lot more capable. Updated styling, new infotainment and instrumentation and a bigger battery.

Yes, new one is supposed to have a choice of 50 and 70-something batteries. Be interesting to see if the 50 stays at the same price when it lands in NZ.

As far as I am aware all the allocation of the current model have been sold, but we dont have timeframe or pricing for the new one.

This is the key point though. Forgetting floor mats is one thing, but missing such a safety critical item is bizarre. I would have thought there would be multiple levels of QC to make sure this couldn't occur.

Since you pay “On Road Costs” on new and imported used vehicles, which vary from a low of just the registration fee, to a couple of thousand dollars, then I would expect the vendor would be required to make sure the vehicle was safe to actually go on the road. They aren’t sold “As is, where is”.

Florida of course. The whole state should be designated as a "mystery spot"

My understanding is that the Tesla braking system does not integrate regen as many or most other EVs do, so any application of the foot brake would operate the calipers, etc.

My Kona will use regen from the foot brake down to about a walking pace.  If the disks are slightly rusty I can hear them engage at very low speeds.

Thats correct , though any lift off of accelerator engages regen in a tesla, new ones dont even give the option of no regen.

@KiwiME, that's kind of correct, they don't integrate regen with the brake pedal which is good. Integration seems to be very clumsy in practise - you get mushy brakes and a weird spot where it transitions from regen to friction. You could drive around for ages without ever needing to touch the brake pedal at all in a model 3 so conceivably wouldn't notice at all under gentle driving conditions.

If Tesla "don't integrate regen with the brake pedal" as you state, I'm puzzled why that would make my statement "kind of correct?"

The regen integration is very good in the Kona and presumably in the sister vehicles Niro and Ioniq. Many new owners don't even know that it does this. When the disks are clean there's no perceptible transition in my experience over three years of ownership.

People really need to think carefully about their situation and personality type when choosing to purchase a car made by a tech company, versus one made by a traditional auto maker.

Tech companies design radical products and do so on a best effort basis, with the assumption that they can issue an 'update' to fix their mistakes. Mainstream manufacturers, in contrast, apply the kaizen methodology which has been highly successful among Japanese car manufacturers for many decades but is ostensibly too conservative for computer geeks who want the latest gadgets.

I know which I prefer, but it's good that the market is catering towards different types of buyers.

Thats quite an assumption.

Established Auto are not beyond getting some cars wrong off the production line either.

i have looked at all the currently available EVs, the only EV I'd buy today is a Tesla model 3. they've been making EVs for more than a decade, while most other EVs are made by ICE manufacturers dabbling in EVs, bar a few. no doubt they will improve but you get the feeling that they are just repurposed ICEs.
