I dont know a single EV you can move whilst plugged in.

Even the EV1 had that feature.

RobDickinson:

You realise the WHOLE POINT of the supercharger network was because there was no charging network, and no other company was willing to fund one?

Yes. But I don’t run the EU.

Yeah, it's a safety feature. It's a pity ICE vehicles don't have that feature to stop muppets driving off with the filler attached to their car. Besides who wants to drag a long extension cord to the corner store 😀

If you go back to my initial post, I wondered if part of the reason that Tesla was opening up its Superchargers to other car brands in Europe was to head off any accusations by the EU that it was an anticompetitive practice to exclude other vehicles. Sorry if that wasn’t clear enough. Personally I have no problem with the way Tesla operates their network. I do wish you could still earn credits in NZ though.

Not having ever used a Supercharger (or even closely inspecting one) how long are the cables? Are they such that you need to reverse in? They must be long enough to reach to the left rear when the charger stall is behind the right rear, mustn’t they? Assuming one stall between two bays.

Because cars in general are designed for LHD markets, we always seem to end up with compromises. With the exception of something like the Taycan(?) which has a port on both sides (or the front for the MG ZS and Leaf), most EVs seem to have the port positioned so the driver gets out of the LH side of the vehicle and plugs it in on the LH side. In the former colonies (and Japan) we need to walk around the other side of the vehicle to achieve this. I’m assuming EVs have clever protections to stop you moving the vehicle with the charging cable attached?

Rob seems to have got bent out of shape when I called the Supercharger network a monopoly. Monopoly is the wrong descriptor. It may more accurately be called ‘anti-competitive’ if you don’t like it, or a ‘competitive advantage’ if you benefit from it.

My point was actually that the EU has a track record for going after anti-competitive behaviour (real or perceived). Just ask Apple, Google, et al. So by making moves to open up their charging network, even a little bit, they defuse that avenue.

Each bay has its own charger stall. This isn't really a LHD/RHD problem, as the ports are on the same side for both markets

But yeah, I don't think there's been any regulations in the EU that are making Tesla do this. The assumption by most is that it's to gain access to government funding. Many countries (including NZ) offer funding to incentivise fast charger roll outs but understandably, they won't fund your fast charger if its only usable by one brand.

So when things I’ve watched talk about using every alternate stall as a matter of etiquette I assume that is because adjacent stalls may share a common feed?

Yes, with V2 chargers (in NZ these have two cables) they have a shared feed with another stall. One will be labelled 1A and the other 1B, etc - you want to avoid a bay with the same number as an in use bay. For V3 chargers (in NZ, these only have one cable and so far, only in Hastings) this doesn't apply and each stall has its own feed.

Yes. Depending on the power available to the site, then each vehicle may get reduced charging speed if there are two vehicles plugged in to the same charger. Often a single charger will feed 2 adjacent pedestals.

Mazda’s build quality will be way better. They can at least get shut lines right.

USA got their V2 chargers upped to 150kw, not NZ, some of ours seem to top out at 80kw sometimes too regardless.

Will try the v3 one day I guess..
