If your plan is to spend $32k on a nearly new fossil car a $42k EV makes a lot of sense if you can stretch (so long as it suits your needs/use).

The problem is that for anyone wanting a vehicle anything larger than a small/medium-sized car (eg Leaf) or a small SUV (MG ZS EV) then there's SFA available unless you're willing and able to pay for an e-tron or other expensive European car.

For those of us looking for a relatively affordable EV replacement for a 'family sized' vehicle like a CX-5, Camry etc, there really is nothing at this point in time.

My 2014 outlander had

  • Parking sensors
  • Auto headlights
  • Auto wipers
  • Leather seats
  • Heated Seats
  • Apple Carplay / Android Auto (after market) (via custom head unit)
  • Reversing camera
  • Tinted windows
  • 19" alloys
  • Dual zone climatecontrol

tbh it wasnt the highest spec either because I avoided the ones with lanekeeping etc as it wasnt a good system at all

Ah ok that's comforting! Maybe I just need to look harder. But then I also don't want to pay that much for a car that's already done 80,000Ks etc.. Does the ICE part have a separate odometer so you know how much that has done vs the electric motors?

This is what I've been looking for recently. Seems like the best options for a 'family sized' vehicle is to go with a PHEV instead.

No - if you get PHEVWatchdog and an OBD2 dongle you can get a lot more info (percentage on electric, actual battery stats etc), I recommend this if you are serious on getting an outlander.

btw the electric motors drive the car almost all the time, the petrol engine drives a generator (unless over 85kph then it has a single gear to the front wheels also)

Well, if one wants a decent boot (and the Camry's boot is cavernous) then the 3 is certainly not an adequate substitute. (I'd been planning on getting a Camry to replace our Mazda6 before I was convinced to go with an EV; no way a 3 could fit what we need to in its boot.)

Fair comparison between the Ioniq and CX5 in terms of size, however it's still a big jump in cost (so back to my earlier point - currently it needs to be a decision based on more than just financial sense).

Are there any good pricing calculators which help weigh the options up?

Here are my numbers, broadly based on Kia Celtos petrol vs Niro hybrid vs Niro electric. There are a lot of assumptions in here which won't apply to all situations and some people may simply disagree with, however even with very favourable inputs it's hard to break even.

In a few years when the capital outlay for an electric car is $15k less and petrol is $4 per litre then it will probably be a different story.

Edit : I should clarify that 'cost per 50kwh' is actually cents per kWh on a 50kw public charger. I labelled that badly, sorry.

I visited my local Hyundai dealer on the weekend, saw the Ioniq 5 - interesting car, looks great from some angles. But couldn't get out of there quick enough after encountering the most arrogant and obnoxious young sales person I've ever encounter. Reminds me, I need to drop them a review ;)

Yeah, there's not much out there, but I'm happy to hold onto my current car until the right EV comes along rather than go with that interim option of a PHEV.

As Rob has pointed out, the Ioniq would fit this bill; personally, the boot smaller than I want and I didn't find it a particularly exciting car to drive. The EV6 could be worth a look at when it finally arrives; personally, I'm still waiting for the Model Y, and would happily put down a deposit today.

Camry boot is about 100L larger than the model 3, but the model 3 has a 80L frunk also. Theres no practical difference in storage. The 3 holds a lot of stuff.

If you want a hatch theres the polestar 2 also.

Many pages back I commented on my test drive of an Ioniq 5 - I understand there's little/no incentive for the local dealerships to sell these, so given this could it be the salesperson wasn't that interested in helping you? (The guy I had was ok, but just totally disinterested and didn't show me anything about the car! I didn't even get asked to sign the standard insurance form.)

Yeah I feel partially in the same boat, buying out of sync with the current offerings is annoying. I guess while the costs in 3-5 years would be lower for an EV, my wife's car would be near worthless by then, so have to trade/sell it soonish for something. My car also needs refreshing, so having one PHEV or BE and an ICE feel like a happy middle ground.

We don't need to have an SVU per se, just something with enough space. Something like a Audi A3 Sportsback or A4 avant could tide us over if I can't find a suitable Outlander, and if we don't want to stretch to the MG.

Oh no, we barely talked about the Ionic, was just the whole experience from the initial hello - awful. I'm sure other dealers or even other staff there may have been better. Possibly a bit like DIY store weekend staff vs weekday staff.

A couple of points that stick out for me in your scenario is that most EV owners charge at home using off peak rates so public charger rates don't realistically reflect 'fuel' cost for them.

Also the introduction of RUCs for EVs will happen at some point but I think it's a fair assumption that in doing so a rejig of the whole RUC system will be implemented to at least cast the net over hybrids too. The loophole that otherwise exists is those hybrid (especially plug-in) owners that can do all or most of their commute using the vehicle's electric capacity only can effectively travel RUC free. I can't see this being allowed to continue.

The only problem with the model 3 boot is the size and shape of the actual access to it. It's got reasonable volume, but you may not be physically able to get some items into it unless you mince them.

Is it that different to a camry? I've put my mountain bike in there many times, suitcases no problem etc...

Honestly in 2.5 years I've not found it a problem once.

And again theres a polestar 2 if thats an issue with a hatch
