Obraik:

I understand, it's because the Japanese government pushed heavily for hydrogen and so the Japanese companies followed along and put most of their eggs in that basket.

Several reasons really -

Japan has/had a lot of Nuclear power to generate hydrogen - thats not really true any longer

Car manufacturing is a massive part of Japans jobs/industry - fuel cells keep a lot of similar manufacturing going

It seemed like a decent bet back in the 80s and 90s but it just hasnt panned out whilst battery tech has improved rapidly

Leaf going gangbusters? Its the only EV you can buy off the lot in the USA, its sales here are terrible given its way over priced and the dealers are not really interested,  not sure how that will change with the Ariya

Ariya is a better proposition and I am guessing they'll get a model in under 80k but its only Nissans second EV model in a decade and if it wasnt for Mazxda /subaru etc would get the least effort switching to EV award.

It's reasonably steady in Japan, which for us is almost a more relevant market than our own.

No doubt they squandered that lead-time though.

About 11,000 a year in recent years, in its home market , corolla was 110,000 or so.

We'll be amongst several countries fighting hard over those used leafs over the next bunch of years, I think we'll be importing a lot more from the UK

Are there any EV owners here who don't have a garage, and consequently rely entirely on public chargers? If so how is it working for you? I checked out the charger at Pak N Save Kilbirnie and, at $0.25 per kw plus $0.25 per minute, it seems quite expensive.

Just to point out that a garage itself isn’t critical; rather it’s off-street parking with a nearby charging point that makes home charging feasible.

We have a caravan socket on the side of the house so my wife’s Leaf is charged from our second driveway (set up by the previous owner as a caravan pad). I imagine some even charge with a power cable out the window.

But, yeah, if you have to do most of your charging via public chargers it’s not going to be cheap. I guess some in the situation may make the most of free chargers in various places (though our local ones are in the mall carpark which only has one hour free parking; still probably cheaper to pay for parking and charge for longer!)

@alasta No, I charge at home, but the rate you quote seems pretty much the standard for Charge-net.

I had a quick look on Plugshare and there aren’t a huge number of public chargers around Kilbirnie. There may be some free community AC destination chargers that don’t show up, but in general you are expected to be a customer to use them. My experience of the local free chargers is they are almost always occupied. I have had about a 20% success rate finding one to use.

And there-in lies the dilemma for people like you. You “want to do the right thing” but the infrastructure just isn’t there to back you up. With local bodies becoming even more anti car by not requiring parking spaces, let alone parking with charging it’s even harder.

Thanks for the feedback. I have an apartment basement car park but there is no power available. Incidentally I'm on the committee for the residents' association, but EV charging isn't currently a priority for us as we have a long list of other more urgent issues to work through.

It's expensive compared to charging at home, but still cheaper than petrol.

It seems Wellington lacks carpark based AC charging. In Christchurch and Auckland, many shopping malls and supermarkets have at least two free AC chargers that you can plug into and charge for free while you shop. Parking buildings around where people work also have many parks dedicated to all-day charging. Do you drive to work which has its own carpark? Would they be open to installing a charger?

Personally I'd probably take the approach of arranging and paying for a locked point box in my park with a reliable kWh meter display and credit the body corporate +5% or something for handling the payment every month. If your apartment power is already split and metered in the basement so much the easier no need for BC to handle it.

There is, but it seems to be lacking when compared to Auckland and Christchurch. Most of those are either at hotels or street parking. Street park chargers is good...but they seem to be more for residents that live nearby rather than at something like a mall or supermarket.

Auckland and Christchurch has plenty of chargers in malls, supermarkets and CBD car park buildings.

If you can find a way to get power to your carpark the saving over the fast charger costs will be significant. Be well worth doing.
