And don't have small garages, or use parking buildings,  :)

Personally I wouldn't park anything I didn't mind getting dented or keyed in a parking garage.

I have several parking garage battle wounds on my car.

However I guess for some NZD $183,000 is an insignificant amount of money.

On the plus side you'd have excellent video footage of anyone messing with your Model X. On the minus side unless you have a clear shot of a car registration, and the police have had their daily free doughnuts and are feeling very charitable, they're more likely to put in the "too hard to investigate" bin.

The larger the city, the less likely police will show up for an accident without someone hurt, or blocking a road. Though some small town police have the same attitude.

"Ford's chief executive says the global auto industry is headed for a huge price war in the coming years as electric vehicle costs drop and multiple companies sell EVs priced around US$25,000 (NZ$38,500)."

Let's hope sooner rather than later!

Mitsubishi and Nissan have released the eK X and Sakura, 20kWh 180km range kei EVs.

Would these be road legal in NZ?

The Sakura is equipped with a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery that has a track record of performance and reliability in the LEAF.

Hard, hard, no-look pass.

I love Kei cars. They're a special Japanese government classification.

"Kei" Japanese classification is not to be confused with "Kia", the Korean manufacturer.

There have been two non-Japanese "kei" cars: The "Smart" car, and the "Caterham Seven" , a super-lightweight UK sports car.

If you're driving primarily in heavy urban traffic alone, they are great. Just a joy to park, and do quick U-turns.

"Kei" cars are legal in New Zealand, and there's even "Kei" EV for sale. (not recommend, as it's old, and these are ridiculously over-priced)

I owned a Mitsubishi Miev, and while it's got the same plasticy look, it's dash, center console and interior are completely different.

It looks like it has all the safety equipment that the Renault Zoe didn't.

I could see it making a good car for seniors.

A small EV with 20kWh battery might be able to do a real world 7km / kWh. That's about 140km. For around any of NZ's towns or cities that's a very good car in many ways. If it has active battery temperature management it could even be used for occasional regional trips. Auckland to Tauranga, for example. That's roughly 210km. So only one charge required on the way and it wouldn't take long due to the small battery size. Twenty minutes?

For a lot of people, these would be awesome.

I don't think I could even fit in one of those. I can get in a Caterham but could never drive it with the length of my legs. I am 196cm

Kei cars tend to have more vertical seating. I think 196 cm would be the limit in the previous model Mitsubishi iMiev.

I am 178 cm, and would have a two couple of fists headroom.

The "A" pillar was quite thick, which left an annoying blind spot.

I guess it depends on how they mounted the batteries.

At that price and with range and fit out comparable to ICEV, it's a no brainer.

The thing I wonder is: When does this become reality?  If lithium supply is constrained then, absent alternate battery tech, EV supply remains constrained.  We wouldn't expect discounting in a supply constrained market, absent some govt interference.

But can it time travel like the new DeLorean EV can (presumably)?

Unlikely. Can't see it getting to 88 miles an hour unless it was falling off a cliff.
