Not there yet. It will happen. The incredible thing is just how reliable and low maintenance those things are. When I start seeing them with for sale $3000 in the window on the side of the road I'll know we have reached that point of availability.

I think Aqua will end up like the Toyota Starlet 20 years ago. So reliable they were somewhat overpriced in the consumer to consumer second hand market because of reputation and sometimes hard to find due to near constant demand on that basis.

Back to the point anyway fuel consumption average is continuing to drop with fleet replacement although I expect the popularity of sometimes unnecessary utes will be creating an odd band of consumption until those start becoming available in hybrid and electric.

The current generation of utes I'm wondering if a shorter lifetime for some of those is going to compensate for the increase fuel consumption ; )

We know someone who has just sold their plugin hybrid and purchased a diesel ute, as it makes more sense for them financially at the moment. Kind of shows how much of a backwards step NZ has taken. Not sure I see National bringing in carbon taxes on petrol, when they removed the Auckland regional fuel tax because they said they wanted to reduce peoples costs.

I'd suggest that the PHEV wasn't the correct vehicle for them to have owned to start with. Under the new RUC's a PHEV is the perfect vehicle for what it was designed for. Trouble is a lot of people bought them for the wrong use profile and the new RUC's highlight this stupidity.

Where the vehicle can be used the majority of the time using battery and the ICE function is used rarely

I would have the ideal usage profile. I commute to work daily with a 30 km round trip. I don't use my car (a 2006 Japanese model) for anything else. Perhaps a BEV would be even better, but lugging around enough batteries for a 500 km range doesn't seem sensible when I'm only ever going to travel 15 km between charging opportunities.

I have a garage I can charge in at home, and there are also free charging facilities at work. Still doesn't make sense for me to buy a new vehicle right now.

Taking as example an eight year old second hand Toyota Prius 2012 PHEV reviewed in NZ an excellent 100km per 4 litres with battery depleted.

AA New Zealand: Economy-wise, the Prius [2012] PHEV’s fuel consumption is rated at 2.5L/100km according to the EPA. During testing, even with the battery depleted and running in hybrid mode we could achieve around 4L/100km via both motorway and urban driving.

Using some schoolboy physics... and assuming perfect charging efficiency...

240V * 10A = 2400 W

2400 W * 1.5 h = 3600 Wh

So the battery is 3.6 kWh ?

2012 PHEV Prius is 4kWh. Then 10 years later model..

2022 PHEV Prius is 8.8kWh

Assuming a consumption rate of 5km/kWh a 4kWh battery will provide 20km max on battery power alone. Short commuting may work but anything beyond that it becomes a hybrid ICE and the freqency of battery depletion isn't going to be great for life of battery.
