Rooftop solar and storage needs to be wired for resilience to get the absolute max out of it; I'm in a pretty urban part of Auckland and we spent about three days without power about five years back when a really decent storm blew through. Sounds like we're in line for more events of that nature but if your solar is wired so that it needs to be offline when access to the grid goes down then you're missing out on one of the main advantages of what is effectively decentralised generation.

The only way you can use the generation from PV in the case of a grid outage is if you have storage capacity and the system is 'islanded'. This is the same safety feature that applies for back-up generators which must have a 'dead man' switch which prevents any generation from back feeding into the grid, where it would put repair staff at risk.

For PV a storage battery needs to be included in your installation to provide an uninterrupted and stable supply voltage otherwise you would risk your own 'brown out' situation which would put your appliances and other electrical equipment at risk of damage.

I'm not a sparky and may be slightly off the mark on some of that but it's the general gist of the situation as I understand it. In our own situation we have no storage other than by way of diversion to a hot water cylinder with a Paladin unit so when the district suffers a power outage so do we. For the time being at least the added cost of including battery storage in our system isn't cost effective, especially as we have an EV (soon to be 2 EVs) that we can squirrel away excess generation to rather than exporting it.

Whereabouts in the northern half of the North Island (where the power is required) is Lake Onslow?

That's an obtuse thing to say. We will always need inter-island transmission lines, with or without Onslow. Especially if we start adding significant amounts of wind or solar which work when they want to, not when or where we want them to. The whole point of the Lake Onslow project is to store excess energy from non-dispatchable generators like these.

Yea my understanding is that many installs do not get wired in this way, so are functionally useless if the power goes off. IMO we should be standard-setting to realise the resilience benefits residential rooftop PV can offer.

I like the idea of V2G but not the idea of crapping out a Leaf battery even faster than it naturally already does.

It won't be cheaper than the MG, but damn it is quite a funky looking car. The youtube reviews out of China are generally positive with solid if not unremarkable performance and handling and range seems to be pretty close too advertised.

Apparently the RHD Australian version (renamed Atto 3 from original name of Yuan Plus) has had development work on the handling etc for 'overseas' markets:

https://thedriven.io/2021/12/03/australia-spec-byd-yuan-plus-seen-testing-in-china-ahead-of-2022-arrival/

The suspension area was one area I read had undergone some development.

A few e-boats are creeping into the finfish farming industry too.  Generally battery electric for day-tripping farm  boats that don't do that much work (kWhr perspective).  Anything that does a bit of work is hybrid.  Anything that does any real work is still full diesel.

i could be wrong (or confused between the Ora and the BYD) but one youtube clip I watched indicated that the changes won't be happening, that the only difference between the China one and the Aus/NZ one will be the side the steering wheel is on.

Suspension/handling tweaks are very easy to throw in literature without any real explanation and can be such a minor change its irrelevant anyhow

The Atto 3 is quite a handsome vehicle for its class. A few quirky bits on the inside like its vents and door handles, and I’m not really sure it needs a rotating centre display. But I guess that’s for people that spend their life staring at a phone screen in portrait mode and anything else looks “odd”.

Maybe it was the review I watched, but the rear cargo space looked kind of narrow.

Be interesting when this arrives to compare it to the MG ZS. Although similar in size, the Atto 3 and MG ZS are in a different league from the similarly sized Kona and Niro. It is going to take some serious pencil sharpening to justify +$20000 for the Hyundai or Kia.

Edit: Oh and the first thing I would be doing if I got a BYD is take the “Build Your Dreams” lettering off the boot.

Its boot shape reminded me strongly of a Leaf, with a high lip and relatively narrow opening. As it happens, one comparison table I read suggests the boots are very similar size (434 vs 435 l) - going by the Leaf it's an ok size, but the design makes it frustrating to load/fit things in.

Dropping mineral prices forecast to reduce EV prices

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-06-09/electric-cars-lithium-price-batteries-credit-suisse/101135860

Everything I've read about the lithium market reminds me of the oil market - supply is very demand sensitive and a few countries/cartels have lot of control.

I hope I'm wrong.  Cheap lithium would be good not just for cheaper cars but for mobile devices, and even toys.
