I suspect the Lightnings will have similar issues its made out of the same parts bin I think.

 

 

 

Over half the MachE's went to Europe to counter the co2 fines so they dont really need to sell those above cost to save money overall. 

 

 

 

Agree we have a fair few EVs just under the 80k and it doesnt pay (outside of sales they can get elsewhere) to sell them at a loss here.

Yep. My policy is never buy the first two years of a radically changed car. This includes "reliable" brands like Mercedes.

Mercedes is not reliable, I don't think any German brand can be considered reliable ....

 

Some cars over time have turned out to be reliable though ... but not uncommon to see their engine give up, or sunroof leaking, electronic gremlins ...

 

Having said that, German cars are much much much more reliable than Italian ... those ones ... smh

Agree. It could be a long lived topic. Imo the key with Tesla is in "full self driving" "capability" = "does not do it yet". As I recall Musk has always been clear that is the case. Like anything over the horizon there are a variety of opinions about how far in the future that is.

Now they've reported that they are making no profit on the vehicle due to inflation. Maybe the F150 Lightnings that they've started shipping can help out the stranded Mach-Es on the highway 😉 

 

 

Mind you for quite a while Tesla was only making money from selling their emissions credits,

Interesting review of a 300kW Polestar2 towing a small caravan and the effect it has on battery range/energy consumption. I did wonder whether backing off the caravan's brake intensity to better capitalise on the extra inertia for regen would have helped. Questioned raised in the YouTube comments.

Planning long-distance trips with an EV?

 

With the possibility our new EV may arrive sometime this year (I'll believe it when I see it in the flesh!) we could be facing a choice as to whether to take the new car on a 16-day family holiday around the SI or to hold onto my ICE car to use that instead. To help work out how easy/feasible taking the EV would be I've started looking into route planners, but would appreciate some direction about the best ones,  or the names of sites that provide good background and guidance on this.

 

I've started with A Better Route Planner, but they don't have the entry-level RWD Model Y as an option; so I selected the equivalent in the M3 and thought I could adjust the reference consumption to something more akin to what to expect from the MY. But adjusting that (even entering a farcical figure) makes no difference to the range; (still claims 399km!) but even if it did, where would I find a realistic figure to use?

 

While we've owned an EV for years, it's a low-range Leaf (an urban 105 km range on a good day) so have never needed to worry about this kind of stuff and it's a bit of a step into the unknown.

 

Any tips, tricks and links would be much appreciated.

When you normally do a road trip, how often do you normally stop for yourselves? With a 16 day road trip, your longest travel days are most likely going to be the getting to your start point and then getting home. One thing that can make a big difference is using PlugShare to check the areas you plan on staying overnight to see if they have hotels/motels with EV chargers. If the premium isn't too high over other accommodation then it can save you having to stop and charge along the way as you can just have the car charge in the car park overnight.

 

If it was me, I would be taking the Tesla for sure. Fully charged with a car full of people and luggage you're probably looking at 3-4 hours of driving on a charge and by the end of that I'm usually looking to stop and get some food, stretch my legs, etc.

The Y should do 350km pretty well I would think. Plenty of 50kw around and a few superchargers, plus quite a few location shave level 2 charging now.

Yeah, I'm sure it's totally possible, but it's having clarity on how it'll work in practice that'll give us (especially my wife!) the confidence to do it.

 

As we had no expectation of having the car before the trip (and, actually, didn't even expect to be able to buy the car, given it started to look like it wouldn't be under the rebate cutoff) we've already booked all accommodation so hadn't taken charging into account. That said, most places are Air BnBs, so I'm guessing at most of these we can slow charge over-night and get at least 100km of charge, which will reduce charging times and potentially even the need to charge the next day.

 

I've even managed to wrangle ABRP to the point it's producing something useful, and that confirms the trip is doable. Where I am struggling, though, is with what a realistic 'reference consumption' is for the RWD MY. This site indicates real-world consumption for the standard range M3 is 151 Wh/km; I've used 180 for the MY, which (as an example) suggests I can do a pretty un-taxing trip of PN>Wgtn return on a single charge if starting at 100%, and finishing on 13%:

 

 

So a couple of quick questions:

 

* does that figure of 180 kWh/km seem ok to provide a decent enough (but ideally a bit conservative) estimate of range?

 

* is specifying a 10% SOC at the end of a day of travel an ok amount (ie, provide enough of a buffer; not running it down too low)?

The Model 3 is typically closer to 140 wh/km (not kWh/km!! :D) so yes you could do it just fine - and there are plenty of charging stops between Wellington and Palmy if you got nervous.
