I can understand your unease. We ventured slightly further afield for the first time over QB weekend. I did as much research as I could on what recharging options were available at various locations and didn’t leave myself with a ‘single point of failure’ situation (one charger and it’s broken). However, you also need to be prepared in your scheduling for the charger to be busy when you get there.

I think you are wise to work on 180Wh/km. Just don’t let your holiday be ruined by anxiety.

SaltyNZ:

The Model 3 is typically closer to 140 wh/km (not kWh/km!! :D) so yes you could do it just fine - and there are plenty of charging stops between Wellington and Palmy if you got nervous.

Typo fixed! Thanks for pointing out...

I've ordered a Y so it'll definitely not be as efficient as your 3, but given I've allowed for 180 wh/km, that a fairly conservative 30% higher than the typical 140  you mention for a 3.

Yep, a good number of chargers on the way to Wgtn, and not worried about that particular route - more using it as a practical example (as it's the most common trip we make) to get my head around what to expect on longer trips.

I assume the NZ MY's are still coming with the mobile charger, but get yourself a 3-phase type 2 cable as well. With these in the frunk you can make use of BYOC destination chargers and as an ultimate fallback, anywhere with a power point.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks (too much?) about this stuff... Yep, good point about busy chargers, especially on days when there are fixed events like a ferry to catch: probably safest to charge to a higher point the night before if necessary so as to be able to get through and charge on the 'other side' (eg, charge after the ferry).

Hopefully the car will arrive a good time before we set off at Xmas so we can take it for a decent drive to get that real-world experience, much like your recent trip.

For ferry Wellington has plenty of DC chargers, its more limited the other side, you have to go to Nelson or Blenheim but neither is super far.

Supposedly chargers being fitted to some ferries also.

Thanks for the advice re this type of cable.

Can anyone recommend a decent-value one? Would people recommend sourcing from within NZ, or can you get decent quality (and that meet standards) but better priced cables from o/s?

The situation is so much better these days than the first time I decided to try driving a 30kWh Leaf from Warkworth to Eltham, knowing that it was in fact physically impossible for it to actually make one leg going the short way, and that even if it could we'd be cooking the battery by the end of the day.

Last trip in the M3 over Easter ... it took longer to find the Supercharger in Hamilton (thanks, basement carpark) than it did to do our one stop and be back on the road.

Hopefully it was on one of the non shopping days over Easter. “The Base” shopping centre is a ‘mare at the best of times so deciding to put the SuperCharger under the mall wasn’t their finest work.

Yeah, no wait either there or back, didn't even have to share a unit.

EV inflation at the moment is very real.

For those who haven't delved into the EV6 thread, that car is getting hit by a $5k price hike across the range at 5pm tonight.

Means that the EV6 LR RWD, will join the Polestar 2 LR as cars no longer qualifying for the Rebate.

I know you’re expecting me to say it, so I won’t disappoint.

Time to increase the rebate limit!

Blame Covid, blame Putin, blame whoever you like, but get real and at the very least adjust for inflation. Or better still, make it $100K and be done with it.

That still excludes ‘rich’ people’s cars like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc so their socialist credentials would remain intact.

Cant remember if that limit is adjustable in the legislation, I know the actual rebate itself was set to drop over time

But I think the general expectation was for EVs to get cheaper so we would have more choice, if only the government had into on inflation.

As the ‘temporary’ reduction in fuel excise and RUCs will show, once you give people something it becomes very difficult to take it away. Yes, the legislation says it will drop, but people might just say “Nope, don’t want an EV”.
