joker97: If u had driven the sorento R you would not want to get into japanese car ever again.

I hired one when in Australia.
Late model Highlander or Honda CRV would sort that out.
I remember seeing these EXACT same fonts and layout on a 1995 Subaru legacy GT.

In some overseas markets where 5 year warranties are the norm Kia actually offer full mechanical warranties of 7+ years so they're obviously pretty serious about building their brand credibility.

I don't think there's really any difference in quality between Japanese and Korean cars these days. In fact I probably prefer Korean because I find the interior layout of some Japanese cars a bit geeky whereas Korean and European interiors tend to feel less cluttered, but that's just personal preference.

My experience earlier this year of searching for a mid-sized wagon and from driving work cars (which are all Hyundais) makes me wonder if the Korean companies have got a little too confidetn. For example, the entry level diesel Hyundai i40 wagon is as expensive as the Mazda 6 equivalent but has a smaller engine that is slower and less economical. It also doesn't have basics like a reversing camera, nor does the range offer anything like the safety features we were able to get in the 6 Ltd model. And then there's the driving experience: the i40's not a patch on the 6 for handling.

I drove my boss' modern Hyundai SUV the other day and it's certainly better than the Tuscon, but again not a patch on the CX5.

The one area they certainly have improved is design. I just don't think they offer the same value for money they may have once done.

That is a fair point with regard to Hyundai - their pricing seems very steep considering you can get an equivalent Kia model with the same mechanicals for less dosh. We have an i40 in our fleet at work and I have heard good things about it, but the ix35 is getting dated and needs a major refresh.

I'm still deciding whether my next car will be a hatchback or a compact crossover, but either way it will probably come down to Kia vs Mazda. Mazda now has a real advantage on fuel economy and they have some really nice features that you wouldn't expect in their respective price brackets. On the other hand I find the Mazda3 a bit tight for cargo space and I don't like the Bose audio that they use in the high spec variants. Considering that I don't use my car much I'll probably be happy with whatever I buy.

is it a CVT one? if so the first gen pre facelift ones are more prone to the shuddering issue so make sure you service the transmission regularly, and also you can throw some Xado EX120 in it. it does wonders for preventing the dreaded shuddering, as well as fixing it.

i try to walk most days, so this is for when i'm late, it's too frosty (the road is gritted but the walk path is not, some bit reaching 45 degree gradient), selling trademe items, grocery ...

Given you're in the market for an Estima as well (going by another thread), ow many cars do you now (or intend to) own??!! A guy at work confessed yesterday to owning nine, four of them Porsches - are you as extreme as he is? Personally, I find two cars cost more than enough...

no i decided to go cheap and i am no longer getting the estima. 2 cars. jazz (fit), x trail. when i bought the x trail new the car market was changing and there was a shortage of used cars and so it was better to buy new. a few months later imports started to flood the market and now the near new x trail is worthless. it does what it needs to apart from ferry 8 people.

The reality is I'm always thankful that there are some like you that are willing to purchase new, just so others can afford to buy modern but s/h cars! The guy I bought our "new" car off took over a 30% loss in less than nine months, and I've still got two years of free servicing, warranty etc to go. But I'd be gutted and frustrated in your position as well.

What's the fuel economy of the XTrail like?

no good.
in town (flat) it does 9-10L/100ks depending on start stop.
if crusing at 50ks all the way it shows 5L/100Ks. at 70 crusing it shows 7L/100ks. at 100 cruising it shows 11L/100ks.

in town 60% hills it's around 16L/100ks.

between 2 towns it's 11L/100ks

i think it has got something to do with its box shape ie wind resistance. in my diamante when you lift off at 100ks it stays at 100ks for a while. this one you lift off it slows right down proving the wind resistance theory

when i got it new was $43k. 1 year old with 35,000clicks was $40k. 3 year old was $33k.

or 3 year old santa fe at 100,000ks for $44k. etc etc ...

subaru anything with the same spec as $45-50k

and at that time the same 2006 estima I can get for $15k was $30k
