I will work fine if the type 2 charger is a socket-only and you have your own type 2 to type 2 cable for your Tesla. You chould be able to charge at about 16.5kw in current Tesla cars if the Type 2 charger supports 22kw. Apparently early Teslas would do up to 22kw.....but not for the past 2-3 years.

kryptonjohn: I noticed a free EV charger incorporated into the Spark payphone at Waitakaruru yesterday. No idea if it's a fast charger. Handily placed about half way between Auckland and the eastern Coromandel beaches though.

These can deliver up to 32amp / 7kw to any vehicle that can take a Type 1 plug (J1772) LEAF, Audi e-Tron, BMW i3 and some Outlanders......at least. Most LEAFs can't charge faster than 16amp / 3.3kw, but some (like mine) can do double that.

Yes. You would just need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Have a look around as the prices are dropping rapidly as more people need them. I've seen prices between $250 and $350.

The IONIQ charging port supports AC Type 2 via the Type 2 port on the top portion. The lower portion (those two pins) works with the top portion to also provide DC fast charging via CCS Type 2 or "Combo 2".....being a combination of the Type 2 above and the CCS DC below. The Type 2 part is used for communication between the car and fast charger. The bottom part is DC power transfer. The IONIQ can actually support up to 120kw charging (I think), but we don't have any chargers in NZ that can deliver that to non-Tesla cars.

You can see clearly in this photo how it's laid out. In the photo, a plain Type cable is plugged in.....and the car will be AC charging at (probably) 7kw.

From reading the Ioniq handles 6.6kwh with its onboard charger if I have it right.

Another question - is there such a thing a lead that would connect the Ioniq to a charge point that has a type 1 socket i.e type 1 to type 2? I am thinking of the chargers that are at Zealandia in Wellington.

EVnomics in Australia sell an adapter you would plug into the Type 1 (J1772) connector on the end of the charger's cable....and then plug the Type 2 end into your car.

It's AU$279. It's rated up to 32amp. This would let an IONIQ use any of the chargers that have the J1772 connectors. I'd definitely get one if I owned an IONIQ or any other car with a Type 2 inlet (Tesla....etc)

New fast chargers online in the past few days include:

Whitianga (Coromandel) - 4 Lees St in the Lees Str car park. It's a ChargeNet Veefil charger with 50kw DC via CHAdeMO and CCS Type 2. ChargeNet account required. Activation via RFID fob or ChargeNet app (Android / Apple) or txt or the Start Charge page on the ChargeNet web site.......or as a last resort, call 0800 2 CHARGE. Pricing is 25c / kWh + 25c / minute. Open 24/7.

The DC fast charger in Coromandel Town is also supposed to be live any day. Whangamata is also coming soon after. When they are active, the ring of 5 fast chargers (including Thames and Tairua) around the Coromandel will be complete. They are all ChargeNet chargers.

Woodville (Manawatu) - At 43 Vogel St next to the i-Site. It's a ChargeNet Veefil charger with 50kw DC via CHAdeMO and CCS Type 2. ChargeNet account required. Activation via RFID fob or ChargeNet app (Android / Apple) or txt or the Start Charge page on the ChargeNet web site.......or as a last resort, call 0800 2 CHARGE. Pricing is 25c / kWh + 25c / minute. Open 24 / 7.

The Woodville charger is about 80km from both Waipukurau and Masterton and should remove the need to charge in Palmerston North for smaller battery EVs travelling between Napier / Hastings and Wellington. This route is now essentially complete, with at least one fast charger every 80kms between Napier and Wellington (and also extending from Taupo to Napier) which is awesome. :-)

Fairlie (MacKenzie District, Canterbury) - Opposite 53 Main St, Fairlie - It's a ChargeNet Veefil charger with 50kw DC via CHAdeMO and CCS Type 2. ChargeNet account required. Activation via RFID fob or ChargeNet app (Android / Apple) or txt or the Start Charge page on the ChargeNet web site.......or as a last resort, call 0800 2 CHARGE. Pricing is 25c / kWh + 25c / minute. Open 24 / 7.

The Fairlie DC fast charger completes the ring around SH8 and SH83 allowing easy travel from Timaru to Fairlie, to Tekapo, to Twizel, to Omarama to Kurow and onward to Oamaru or Waimate. It also now enables southward direct access from Ashburton / Christchurch via Geraldine on SH79. This is the first, major inland loop route to be completed on the South Island

When the Wanaka charger completed, the way will be open from this route through to Wanaka and onward to Alexandra and then Queenstown or Roxburgh (chargers are under construction in Wanaka and Roxburgh and complete in Alexamdra). The South island is really opening up south of Christchurch.

Charge Net also say they hope to have several more chargers online before Xmas, including Hawera and Whanganui, finally allowing easy travel to / from New Plymouth (at least from the south and east).

I'm keeping an eye on Tokoroa....at the New World........as this charger is really needed to close the large-ish uphill gap in direct travel from Cambridge to Taupo. I've done it my 30kWh LEAF, but it was close shave. A charger in Tokoroa would make it easy.

Thanks Linuxluver for your replies which are very helpful. I have bought an Ioniq and will have it at the beginning of December so trying to work out what cables/connectors/chargers I should have in addition to what comes with the car to make my travelling easiest over the summer when I will be doing a lot of travelling around the country.

I have bought the RAY-EV charger and an Amp Fibian as my car is kept in an apartment garage where it would expensive to install a wall charger and I think this gives me more flexibility and options than the charger that comes with the car. From your comments I think i will get the type 1 to type 2 cable and maybe also the type 2 to type 2. Also I have a good extension lead.

I would be interested to know what you carry in your car in terms of cables etc?

You're surrounded. There are fast chargers already at Pukekohe, Te Kauwhata and Raglan. :-)

So provided you charge up at home, your can easily top up on your way to / from anywhere else.

Another alternative would be you installing a 32amp Type 2 charger and making it available for free or charge to visitors and other locals. I did this at my house in Opotiki.

I'd love to buy a Ray. They are very nice. I have two of the earlier Sparks. They do the same job, but don't have the wee digital display. It's all analog.

What do i carry in the car? There are four scenarios I have in mind.

1. Just driving around Auckland. I keep a 10amp Nissan EVSE (comes with UK LEAF) in the wee EVSE bag strapped in the boot. Plus an RCD lead to add another 1.5m of reach as well as the the RCD. This gear is in case I get stuck somewhere on the wrong side of an obstacle (accident, landslide, whatever) and can't get to a fast charger. I do recommend you always have a way to charge from any 3-pin household plug. It's the ultimate backup. You can literally charge *anywhere* .....if slowly. Most useful when staying at motels or a friend's place overnight. Just park in front of the unit, throw an extension out the window and plug the car in...and maybe put the door mat (there often is one) over the cable so no one trips on it.

2. Minor road trip. The item in 1, above, as well as one of the Spark EVSEs with a blue commando plug for use in camgrounds. They charge faster. I also carry my Type 2 to Type 1 cable so I can use the Type 2 socket chargers popping up. They also come in handy at some fast chargers if the DC charger is already occupied, but the charger also has a 22kw Type 2 port (like in Whakatane) so at least I can charge at 6.6kw while waiting for the car on the DC side to finish.

3. Major road tip. All of the above, plus a spare Spark and a Mini-Blu which provides me with a backup in case anything fails / malfunctions. I like to have a 'Plan B'. This gear set gives two completely separate ways to charge at 16amp and 10amp. If I need to. It also gives me something I can lend to someone else who is stuck......This amounts to the wee bag in the car and a second, smallish, squashable backpack with the other stuff in it.

4. If I want to maximise boot space, I'll remove ALL of that (it doesn't take much space, but sometimes you need the extra) and carry nothing and just rely on fast chargers. That's an Auckland scenario. I'd never go out on the highway without a backup in case the fast charger I need is broken...and I can't reach another. At least with the Spark or 10amp Nissan EVSE I can still charge up even if it is slower.

Great information thanks - surprising how much time it has taken for me to work all this out but to have your experience confirming what I had almost concluded is extremely helpful. I couldn't think of anything more frustrating than to be at a public charging point and not be able to connect because you didn't have the necessary connector or plug. On looking details up on Chargepoint or Plugshare it is not always obvious e.g. I had presumed that Kaikoura would be a good point to charge at travelling Wellington to Christchurch but of course eventually realised that it was type 1 and not yet upgraded - so getting the 1 -2 adaptor will solve that.

Not sure that I as quite as risk adverse as you in terms of having two sets of gear just incase one fails but I understand your thinking.

Looking forward to using all this when the car arrives.

We live in Tuakau, but need to go to port Waikato weekly for our sons Sea Scouts. Even charging 80% at Puki (after work) we won’t likely make it back from Sunset beach in our 2011 Gen 1 (81% SoH) so am looking at whether they have plans for a charger there sometime soon?

Where do you get all your ‘in progress’ info please?

Charge net NZ website lists all the chargers they are putting in which are under construction. Look at the map. The ? Glossary explain colours is on the left
