Just out of interest, the mode 2 (granny) cables that people received with their EVs, how long are the cables? Most EVs are 4-5m long so I would assume they are at least that long? Likewise the type 2 cables for use at public AC chargers? I note a few manufacturers (not Tesla)  supply both cables.

We are getting some electrical work done soon so it would be good to be able to position stuff correctly to future proof.

Did you just ask how long a piece of string is?

Did you RECEIVE (ie supplied by the OEM at time of delivery) a piece of string with your EV?

I'd say my two (both OEM Audio chargers) are about 5m.

Cheers. I am particularly interested in what comes with the vehicle so as to 'make do' until a more permanent solution is worked through.
Our garage currently has power on the driver's side when nose in (reversing in is 'sub-optimal' in our situation) so assessing what will work.
May get the sparky to run a cable capable of 32A to a socket on the opposite side of the garage while he's here. Then can swap it out for a wall box if and when.

Yeah I suppose it varies, but the 8A one of those came with the car. I've generally found that 16A (and the Leaf can't even pull that much, it's only 3.3kW) is sufficient to cover our daily driving needs. I'm only getting the 7kW EVSE instead of a second 16A caravan plug power point because it will have the smarts to draw the excess from solar instead of export to grid to buy back later at a higher price.

My Tesla UMC (comes with the car) is around 6m long. If you get the sparky to put a 32A capable cable to a new temporary socket on the passenger side, have him make it a 15A socket. I'm not sure about other EVSE equipment, but the Tesla charger comes with a tail for both 10A and 15A, so might as well use that if you can (assuming you end up getting a Tesla).

Thanks, that is useful information. So UMC is capable of drawing up to a notional 3.6kW with the right wall socket and wiring? The house will probably handle that considering it’s other loads (not sure about 7.2kW that’s what the research is for).

Am I right in thinking you can set the charge rate (up to the maximum available) from within the Model 3’s settings? So if you really need to charge while there are other big loads you can limit it.

The UMC is capable of going all the way up to 32A single phase, if you can find the right connector for it (so far, only third party connectors exist for 32a). Tesla does sell a 16A caravan plug tail for the UMC but that doesn't make a lot of sense for home charging anymore now that the new UMC can draw the full 15A with the provided 15A connector (previously they were limited to 2-3A lower)

Yes, you can control the charging rate from the car and the app so you can lower it down as required. I have this issue with a dryer running on the same circuit so I have a bit of automation with Home Assistant/Node Red that stops the charging until the dryer finishes.

@Dingbatt Just remember that a Type B RCD is a requirement if a socket is going to be used for EV charging and most sparkys won't install even a blue socket without one for safety which sets you back a further $500-$700. If you're getting a Tesla, for this, you may as well get a Tesla charger which has additional "smarts" in it and a convenience factor.

A sparky should only be requiring a Type B RCD if they're installing a wall box. Something like the UMC does not require a Type B RCD

The advantage of the 16A caravan plug tail is that you can use it at powered camp sites. That was why I originally got it for the Leaf.

Yeah if you're going to camp sites then for sure, it's a good purchase. But if you're getting a caravan plug installed at home just to charge your Tesla it's not really worth it now with the new version - just get a 15A socket installed and then it can be used for the car or any other appliance
