mrblue: yah I feel much the same way, the thing is, I don't skydive, or eat fire or jump buses on a motorbike or drive twice the legal limit in an effort to prolong my life. I don't generally avoid situations that would affect my life day to day (such as driving), but I think avoiding airlines that I don't feel safe on, doesn't fit into that category.

Goodness me are you still pursuing your irrational fear of Qantas based on what you read in the news media. It may surprise you to know that Air NZ and other airlines have their vermin adventures too.

At least Qantas keep their rats constrained, unlike Air New Zealand who let them wander around the cabin and cuddle up to the passengers. You may like to look at this news item http://articles.latimes.com/1999/sep/01/news/mn-5638 which I recall happening. If memory serves me the Air NZ flight had departed Tahiti.

So looks like if you are frightened of the possibility of rats on board you had better look for an airline other than Air NZ. They tell me that on airlines from countries where the populace regard rats as a delicacy you are safer from them, just be careful that you don't get served them as an airline meal.

Some of this thread reminds me of Air Albatross that had reliability problems with their Metroliners. It was obvious that someone in the hanger was phoning the papers every time the tool box was opened. The was no mention of any of the work done on other aircraft at the time.

Bird Strike isn't really in same area as everything else I don't think, neither are asteroids :)

No doubt, should it be determined that it was actually a bird strike, it will be proven to have been a loss of separation with a Qantas seagull whose pilot was fully to blame.

More likely to be a Jetstar seagull as they seem to be the airline scavenging around the world's commercial airline routes at the moment
