I was driving home from a sporting thing on sunday, and a car was driving on the wrong side of the road. Travelling in the same direction as me, just on the other side of the road.

Some cars coming in the opposing direction were honking and flashing their head lights and this noddy figured it out.

It was at night, pretty sure it was an elderly person.

[edit] the funny thing is, they couldn't get back on the right side of the road due to a median barrier so they just kept on going until such time they could cross over.

Yep.

I know that "the 300 club" is also a thing, remove limiters, perform other mechanical mods (if needed), and verify.

Muppets that do that sort of stupid stunts on our roads if caught should receive as a minimum a life time driving ban.

Why do you jump to that conclusion? What makes elderly worse drivers, especially a they do get tested more regularly. I think it is more than likely they are from overseas and used to driving on the other side of the road, or drunk. That is one reason they have arrows on the roads now on roads that are often driven by tourists.

I don't know if many bikes have limiters on them. I know most cars do, Japanese imports for example are usually limited to 180kmh, a lot of big Euros are limited to 250kmh.

They already know how to drive a car, so it would be largely redundant, and probably also very difficult to judge, as it would be very subjective. The medical test with a qualified doctor, and eyesight would show the personal fitness to drive, and should prevent then driving on the wrong side of the road.. The road code test would also be a refresher, but honestly I doubt many drivers in their 20-60's know all the road rules, as they are quickly forgotten, and is evidenced by the poor driving and all the muppets on the road in NZ, and the existence of this thread. I don;'t think people release for example that you shouldn't drive past a stopped school bus picking up or letting out people, at more than 20km/h in either direction, because I hardly ever see anyone do this, and I sometime get honks when I slow down when passing.

So we do have systems in place to minimise age related issues being an issue with older drivers. However as far as I can see, we don't have much in place to minimise the risk from overseas drivers driving on the wrong side of the road. Arrows on the road, and a leaflets in rental cars I believe are common. However I don't think there are any tests etc. I know that I found it difficult when travelling in the US, as switching to driving on the other side of the road takes a bit of getting used to, especially when you get tired from travelling. I would like to see really big fines for people who travel on the wrong side of the road, as it is one of the most dangerous things someone can do on the road.
