If the answer is 'little' or 'none' then I would suggest you have managed to avoid this side of the fandom - and that's not a bad thing, as a lot of it is closer to the rantings of religious/cult zealots than rational conversation.

There is a 'born again' element with many EV owners but from what I've seen online this is particularly concentrated among Tesla owners.

Totally agree; I love the general term 'EVangelist' as it captures this obsessive spirit so nicely! I think one of the reasons for it being so common with Teslas is the strong focus on the single individual at the top.

Having re-joined FB under a pseudonym in order to learn from these Tesla groups (and contribute where I can), once I've got the car and things sorted out I'll be gracefully retiring again. Luckily EV-related threads on GZ are typically more balanced, and I'll still be able to get useful stuff on here!

This sounds like a good reminder of why I avoid Facebook!

We applied for our used import on 9/7 and got the rebate on 26/7, much slower than the first time round.

You assumed wrong. Our Polestar is a business vehicle. Part of the reason for my question about the rebate is because we have a GST period ending on Sunday so curious about the possibility of having to account for the rebate within the current return.

I did actually edit my comment to add the private buyer bit. Not being a business owner I wasn’t sure how the gst bit works. I assumed you pay it, then claim it back.

It’s just I heard a well known breakfast radio host going on about how the feebate scheme had “paid out $100M while only collecting $14M” without even pausing to consider that the rebate started in July last year and the tax only from April this year.

When that was pointed out to him, he then said the rebate was a waste of taxpayer’s money. But certainly in my case the GST I paid was greater than rebate I received and I wouldn’t have bought a new vehicle if it wasn’t for the rebate. So the taxpayer ended up better off.

I can't get into his videos. Don't like his attitude, hard to put a finger on what it is exactly but I don't rate him at all. Probably the statement quoted above about educating your moron friends kind of sums it up. He is quite condescending and comes across as an opinionated dick IMO.

Our business has an eco-friendly focus in the products that we sell. The Polestar is a perfect fit in this regard, more so in that the bulk of its charging will be sourced from our PV. Signage will promote our business on a planet friendly vehicle.

Like any item purchased by a GST registered entity the full price is paid and the GST included in that cost offsets GST collected by way of business activities (sales). A surplus of purchases over income results in a refund. The inverse is a GST payment to the IRD. The difference for us on this purchase is that we will be logging all kms travelled for the first 3 months of ownership in regards to business vs. private use and the resulting percentage of business use will dictate the percentage of its original purchase GST and that of its ongoing running costs that we can claim as business expenses over the ownership of the car. The only real complication is that we won't know the percentage derived from the logged travel until two (2 monthly) GST returns have been submitted so a correction will need to be made to 'balance the books' at that time.

Also the Clean Car rebate comprises $7,500 +GST so that also needs to be factored into our GST return when it is received.

All in all the rebate scheme is an incentive to help NZers away from our current level of dependency on imported oil products and in that respect it is doing what was intended. The rebate together with the RUC 'holiday' and high oil prices have lead to a strong uptake of EVs. The Polestar team mentioned during our collection of our car that they had planned on selling about 150 Polestars in their first year but have had over 500 sales to date. Considering that the average price of those cars is probably close to $80,000 that equates to total sales of $40 million, which is around $5.2 million in GST. And that's just the one EV brand. I guess the government is doing quite well out of the EV buying spree we're seeing.

Likewise I put him in the same camp as John Cadogan. Loud mouthed know it all. That sort of presentation seems to gel with Aussies, or those of the car orientated persuasion at least.
