Scott3:

One more card stuck to the windscreen, and one more thing to keep track of, but conceptually very simple.

Just to derail this even further:

I think it is high time we get rid of the stupid registration cards. Rego and RUC is tied to the car license and in this digital world it is not rocket science to automatically read number plates when you have a registration or RUC control.

So no need for paper cards stuck on the windscreen (or anywhere else).

Otherwise I think the process you are describing is very likely to be the one they implement. I just hope someone drags them into the 21st century and we get rid of the stupid paper cards.

Was just watching a Ford ad on TV. Did the usual Ford electrifying, showing the e-Transit van, the Escape PHEV and HEV, the Focus and Puma Mild Hybrids, and most excitingly (from my POV) the Mustang Mach-E (coming soon).

The weasel words at the bottom of the screen have the clean car rebate disclaimer but included the RWD Mach-E in those vehicles qualifying for the rebate. So sub $80K.

The big question is………when?

When? - Early next year:

The nice thing about having a physical card in the windscreen is that it is quick an easy to check in your pre-drive walk around when you are using a car that is not your own.

Without the card's, one would need to pull out their phone, and look up on the internet if the car was current for RUC's (and WOF / Rego).

But yes, it seems quite wasteful posting thousands of plastic coated paper card's around the country, when the likes of the police can (and do) check the actual status online via their phones, wherever there is mobile coverage.

The process I was described is the current one for any vehicle with a fuel not taxed at sourced (and is not exempt as EV's are), so this is how it works if you have a Diesel or hydrogen car.

System needs a massive shake up before EV's are added into the the mix. Hardly desirable incentive to have a Ora Goodcat or similar paying tripple to use the roads as yaris hybrid.

When the Escape PHEV was originally announced to arrive, versus when it actually arrived was a delay of 7 months. And that was prior to the current ‘problems’. So if they’re saying “early next year”, I read “by Christmas 2023”.

I believe the Mach-E is more of a competitor for the Model Y than cars like the EV6. Looking forward to trying one (one day).

Yes, that was also in the RUC discussion paper for the call for public comments. Electronic records only for both registration and RUC.

lchiu7:He was explaining to me how RU's work. That seemed like  pretty onerous process.

Huh? Very easy, just buy them online at the same time as renewing your vehicle licence, or more often if you want to by a smaller amount.

Automated options were part of the discussion paper in the call for public comments on the rewrite of RUC regulations for 2024. As was moving the entire fleet - including petrol - to a RUC model.

That's where I'd be laying my bets. A monitored system along the same lines as the E-road model would be easy to oversee and clip the ticket on. In general our domestic personal transport options are too varied for the old RUC model so the whole system needs a rehash. Fairly charge hybrids, stop charging RUCs to off road vehicles and other non-road petrol consumption and prevent the current fraud/user error present in owner claimed/self regulated system.

And you can bet that EVs will continue to get a sweeter deal than ICEs as the powers that be do their best to incentivise us all away from fossil fuel use.

Good. Got a WOF for my toy car on Saturday but the place that issued the WOF couldn't print a rego label, so I had to go somewhere else with an NZTA-linked rego label printer.

I could support a uniform RUC for every vehicle that uses the roads, including farm vehicles and tractors.

Then add a tax on fossil fuels. If you don't use fossil fuels, you don't pay it.

But how would a differential for GLW be implemented?

Oh, right. Well, RUCs would be charged on weight class. Heavy vehicles pay more. Carbon & other pollution taxes are charged by the litre. The less fuel you use the less you pollute, so the less pollution tax you pay.

Doesn't matter what the vehicle is. Doesn't even matter if it is actually a vehicle - combustion engined power tools pollute too.
