worth noting that this lower rate now results in a 33% additional charge per km for those buying RUCs in 1,000km blocks online due to the admin fee. How can this be justified for what is a digitally based transaction?

My submission detailing a cryptographic blockchain implementation for secure and private distance travelled calculation was clearly misunderstood and they've implemented a conversion to bitcoin as part of the process instead.

The reduction in the RUC rate for PHEVs announced today will be welcomed by those owning PHEVs but worth noting that this lower rate now results in a 33% additional charge per km for those buying RUCs in 1,000km blocks online due to the admin fee. How can this be justified for what is a digitally based transaction?

Because behind that transaction is an entire system that needs to be run including computer systems and a bunch of people internally and externally (agents).  The value of the transaction doesn't impact the overall cost of providing the system.

Banks can do it for like 1.5%. I don't buy it that printing out a little paper card costs an extra $12.

Banks! Bah Humbug! Banks seem to delight in charging $10 for an EFTPOS card with a very limited lifespan. In contrast the credit card company sends a fresh one yearly which of course they should for the account fee and interest rate..

The NZTA rego system is a mainframe that you need a VPN to dial in to. Desperately needs overhauling to a more modern, more cost effective system.

Most of the banks are still running mainframes too. Maybe not the little New Zealand ones, but the big ones do ... Mainframes are big business.

Sure but it's literally just some fields (make, model, industry) and KM's.You could feasibly do it in a spreadsheet. There is absolutely no good reason for it to cost nearly as much as it does to administer. Gives me vibes of the billion dollar IRD software refurb.

They're certainly leaving it late.....in January I got an email from NZTA saying they'd be in touch in March.....the fact the 1st is in the Easter break is just asking for trouble!

I did see a report that they have dropped the rates payable, but nothing directly from them yet.

Nothing will happen over Easter,  It is from the 1st of June when anyone will actually take any notice, --

But you will pay for RUC back to 1 April (most wont, but the Kms will be minimal across the fleet)

"RUC will apply to your vehicle from 1 April 2024, so you’ll need to buy a RUC distance licence and display the label on your windscreen.
You have until 31 May 2024 to buy your first RUC licence."

I've got a notice saying

Buy RUC between 1 April 2024 and 31 May 2024

and to do that I have enter an odometer reading. Ok, but when? Do I guess what the odometer said on 2024-04-01, or will the current reading do? If it does, can I wait to the last day, and give the odometer then?

I must be missing something.

Regards, John Little

It's the odometer reading at the time you buy the RUC.

Yeah until the first time you get pulled over and the cop looks at your RUC label and finds it starts 15,000km later than your current odometer reading, anyway...
