Apropos of nothing, I used the OpenLoop charger at Otorohanga this afternoon. It was only mildly frustrating to have to find where I’d stashed the app to scan the QR code, since I had already pre-paid $20 some time back.

Changing the subject slightly but the other day I saw a Model S parked on the streets in Wellington. Curious I looked at the registration and it was a 2021 model. I presume that must have been imported from Australia or the UK? Can't imagine how much that would have cost. Nice car though.

There is a black LHD refresh model doing a circuit around NZ at the moment by Tesla engineers for winter testing. It had spent a bit of time in the South Island and had been captured at the various Superchargers down this way.

There may have been one or two late deliveries from early 2021 after they put the S & X on hiatus. However, all RHDs have been on hiatus for the same amount of time waiting on the refresh to be made available. So far, it's only in North America with European deliveries starting late this year.

Interesting article about the perils of EV charging when you don't have off street parking, that I am sure will need to addressed in the medium term

https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/homed/houses/300652056/the-struggle-of-charging-your-ev-when-your-house-has-no-driveway

But the most interesting point to me was the one highlighted... What specs are these builders using for Garages.. Its only a Mini Countryman, so its not a "big" car...

Anany’s property does not have off-street parking, and the car doesn’t fit inside his garage.

He had been parking up against his garage to charge the car, however this meant blocking part of the footpath, which drew ire from locals who were concerned wheelchair users and people with prams and strollers could not get past.

Anany now parks the car between the road and the footpath and charges it after 9pm by running an extension cord to the car, covering it with rubber mats so that no-one trips.

If his garage is anything like mine, a car would fit if it wasn’t so entirely packed with stuff that I can’t fit in the zero storage provided by the rest of my house.
Especially with some of these smaller houses. There’s just no room to keep bikes or anything other than maybe some linen in the main part of the house.

Yeah, the comments below the article were as interesting as the article itself.

Is the garage too small, or is it full of crap?

Maybe the owner should have tried the car in the garage before buying it if the garage is really that small?

Yes, Hobsonville Point is typical of the anti-car ethos that pervades the Auckland Council and its offshoots. No offstreet parking and very limited on street parking either. With relatively poor public transport options.

The article did raise important points about charging options in the future, but in typical Stuff fashion it used a poor example to try and make the point.

Edit: Was composing while @mkissin posted. The lack of storage is a ‘feature’ of housing developments like HPt.

By reducing storage, you can often fit in anther bedroom, which increases the value. So maybe people should turn it into a storage room. Many will use a garage for storage and keep the car outside.

Saw a house being sold for between 2 and 3 million, only about 5 years old, and none of the bedrooms had wardrobes and not much other storage either. There seems to be a trend away from having built in wardrobes in a bedroom too.

Pretty much my thoughts too.

By definition a garage in this context is "a building for housing a motor vehicle or vehicles.", so (unless in the rare case that a garage was specifically sized for say motorbikes), it is not possible for a property to have a garage, but not have off street parking.

Garage in the photo's appears to be a standard single garage, in a modern building. Quick search turned up the min size in Christchurch being 5.5m deep x 3.1m wide, imagine Auckland is in the same ballpark, so yeah, a mini countryman (4.1 - 4.3m long) would eaisily fit. Could even have a 1m deep chest freezer at the far end and have it still fit.

As per the comments, seems highly probable that the garage was just used for some purpose other than parking that particular car. Which is fine, but please don't then complain about lack of a parking space... If the garage is really to small for a countryman, then buy a smaller car that fits...

While Auckland council doesn't enforce it (unless they get a complaint phone call) parking on public land, as the user in the story is doing now blocking a driveway is against the law (section 6.9 (1), Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004). So isn't really a solution to this issue.

Yes some households have no off street parking (or more cars than they have parking), but I would not currently recommend a plug in car in that case (unless it could be charged at work).

That said, in 10 years or so, as we move towards a phase out of non plug in cars, the wider issue of charging EV's who's owners don't have off street parking will need some serious discussion.

Personally I think this solution will be a mix of public on street slow EV charging (as per the wellington trial), and reliance on fast charging. For many users, an hour pluged into a 50kW fast charger while they do their weekly supermarket shop would give enough range to do a weeks worth of running around in something like a 64kWH kona.

First images of Nissan Ariya in the wild turning in japan are turning up on the internet.

Fairly significant as it means they will start turning up in NZ in low volumes fairly soon as grey market imports of near new cars, and in fairly high volumes in 3 - 5 years as people in japan upgrade, and they the used cars get sent to the auctions.

Nissan plan was to discontinue the leaf, In which case the Ariya would take over as it's main EV. But it now seems that nissan may keep the leaf in production much longer due to current high demand for EV's.

On pricing a leaf (40kWh) starts at 3,765,250 yen, Ariya (87kWh, starts at 5,333,546), so expect expect import prices cuia 40% higher than a recent model 40kWh leaf.

Same, no, similar yes.

but then again look at the current range of sedans, all very unique. SUV's getting more similar.

Most them manage to avoid looking like something Dr Robotnik would fly around in though, so there's that.

But if you are right, the logical end-point for car design is LMP1/2/3 cars and I am 100% ready to own cars that look like that.
