I went away for a week or two and came back to a dead leaf, no drama as its 2014evo0 UK spec and still had its original 12v battery.

Pulled it out and put it on trickle charger and back to life. Though 8 year old battery need replacement so ordered new one.

But.... Radio code.... It's on a bit of paper somewhere.... Somewhere... Ahh sxxx

Still on 12 bars. 88% on leaf spy 30,000 miles.

Similar thing happened to James May's Model S during the UK lockdowns, and opening the bonnet of a dead Tesla, (where everything is powered) to get at the 12V battery is rather a mission, involving accessing  specially hidden pull cords...

The Electric Viking guy has been raving about BYD for months.

He ordered an Atto 3 and he's just discovered that all Australian owners will have to pay AU$3100 extra for 6 years of service fees.

This is the big problem with dealer networks.

Tesla don't do this.

BYD have a distribution deal with a crowd called Mycar to enable larger sales network...

Mycar are a Tyre and service centre formally known as Kmart Tyre and Auto service... so Auto servicing is their Bread and Butter

It sounds like the master BYD distributor has bumped the cost of their Mycar relationship  onto the purchasers via this fee...

New car warranty usually comes with an approved dealer service requirement. The breakdown from BYD looks reasonable to me:

CarExpert AU: BYD will back its cars with a six-year, 150,000km warranty, and their batteries with an eight-year, 160,000km warranty.

Servicing is required every 12 months or 20,000km, whichever comes first. Service prices are as follows:

12 months/20,000km: $190.37
24 months/40,000km: $504.25
36 months/60,000km: $190.37
48 months/80,000km: $661.32
60 months/100,000km: $190.37
72 months/120,000km: $504.25
84 months/140,000km: $190.37
96 months/160,000km: $661.32

Service pricing includes labour and required servicing parts like cabin filters.

I'm not going to watch a video but isn't this just a ranty beat up? or is there something more to it?

That looks to be midway between Nissan NZ's service requirements and those of Polestar who have 2 year/30,000km services.

We considered buying a NZ new Leaf back in 2014 when Nissan NZ dropped the price down to $40km but the requirement for 6 monthly services which weren't able to be carried out in New Plymouth but required the car to be trucked to Auckland twice a year for 5 years (at $500 freight cost per time) was a deal breaker for us, even before we discovered the 'cheap' Leafs were in fact unsold Gen 1s ex-Australia.

That begs the question as to where BYD can carry out these annual services for those outside the main cities? We're happy to take a trip to Auckland every couple of years for our Polestar but every 12 months/20,000km is getting a bit much for an EV with minimal mechanical components.

This article says "just 150,000 km"

However in 2011 the AA says 14,000 KM is average in NZ, so 84,000 KM in 6 years.

Cars Guide.com.au: Has BYD buggered up? 150,000km warranty and ICE-style charging costs revealed for Chinese EV brand

One of Australia's most hotly anticipated electric vehicle brands has come under fire from some fans and customers after revealing a new-car warranty that stretches just 160,000kms and servicing costs on-par with some internal combustion vehicles.
...
The brand has just confirmed warranty coverage of the Atto 3, which will span six years or just 150,000km, whichever comes first.
...
Atto 3's local distributor, EV Direct, had previously committed to a seven-year warranty

I have to admit, I didn’t look at servicing costs before getting my EV.

I will be interested to see what Ford NZ does when the Mach E arrives next year. Standard Ford ICE servicing is expensive when compared to the likes of Toyota. Not eye-wateringly expensive like euro brands but still $500-700 per year for a Focus. So it won’t surprise me if they try and charge the same for the Mach E.

What’s the going rate for a technician at a franchise dealer at the moment? $120/hr? Or am I out of touch with prices? The franchise dealership model seems to be kept afloat by the parts and servicing departments.

rb99:

If anyones interested -

https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/mg/4-ev-hatchback/

To my eyes, that looks like a very interesting car - better looking than earlier MGs, and an interior that doesn’t have the ‘look at me, I’m different’ weirdness of the Atto 3. Sure, somewhat dark and somber interior, but I’d prefer that than the Atto 3.

Where is this likely to be pitched, price-wise, if/when it gets to NZ? Could be a good option as a replacement to our Leaf, when the time comes…

Don't know anything about MG4 except that review and a few articles in OZ which just reckon on early next year and maybe starting at (optimistic guess AU$45000).

We've only ever had one new car though, so probably nothing we'll be worrying about.

Agree about the black though. I do like to window shop here where we've got 4 dealers of various descriptions in one street and I doubt if there was more than one car between them that wasn't black on black with black highlights with black bulbs that light up in black when you turn them on...

He needs more sleep. This is a fairly normal level of service cost across 6 years.

My brother bought a Porsche Macan and was shocked to find they wanted $1500-$2000 PER YEAR for service fees.

These fees wouldn't be a show-stopper because EVs are developing so quickly I'd be extremely unlikely to still have that car in 3 years....never mind 6.

And that figure covers your 8 year service, so you are good for 9 years less one day.

kingdragonfly: This is the big problem with dealer networks.

It's also a big advantage. Dealer networks usually resolve minor service bulletins and random things during a service.

Tesla don't do this.

Tesla has a different approach entirely. Imo it's not directly comparable. More so because the two marques have very different spec and price point.
