It took me a while to get the wheel out, in the meantime some muppet decided to bring his car right up to me within inches and sound his horn. I very nice young kid came and helped me for which I am eternally grateful

What an asshat. I'm absolutely stunned someone would behave like that.

I know that the camera distorts depth but that car didn't look close to a near miss.

I've said before that any Island Bay resident that thinks The Parade is incredibly dangerous should stay at home because by the time they get to Adelaide Road they'll be a quivering wreck and it get worse.

The camera distorts the depth by a lot.

This would have been a near miss.

A few mates out on a cruise being muppets. I only caught the front car on film but all three were at it. Sound removed to protect innocent ears from my profanities.

I had a good example the other day. I was approaching a junction where a road on my left intersects a main road (SH2) and waiting to pull out of that road into SH2 was a Police car.

Waiting in the centre of the road, facing me and waiting to turn right, was a small blue hatchback.

I approach at the speed limit of 70. As I get close, the ****wad in the blue car turns across me, causing me to brake hard in order to avoid T-boning him in a 2.5 ton Range Rover which would I suspect have done him more damage than me. I pass the theoretical point of impact (which is literally just in front of the aforementioned Police car) shaking my head at his stupidity (especially so since a glance in my mirrors revealed that the road behind me was empty, so all he needed to do was wait another 10 seconds) and as I pass, the flashing lights come on on the Police car, which promptly executes a U turn and scorches off up the road chasing the eejit in the blue car!

Hopefully he got an earful for his stupidity and a fine.

Definitely need to get a dashcam system in my little Nissan March. Had two extremely close calls in the last month. One was a person racing into a roundabout near the airport as I was coming round. The other (yesterday) was a someone deciding to change lanes down Ngauranga gorge while the front of my car was beside their drivers door - one of those all too common indicate and go without looking scenarios. Heavy braking required both times to avoid a collision.

Every driver probably has had an incident where they've found a car on their shoulder that they weren't aware of until they checked before changing lanes. Ideally they should have been tracking the progress of all surrounding vehicles. If you are being defensive don't drive in somebody else's blind spot. Pull ahead or drop back. India has another answer, drivers seem to use the horn continuously.

Our Volvo has BLIS: Blind Spot Information System.

Cameras under the wing mirrors monitor the blind spot and there is a red light that comes on inside adjacent to the mirror to warn you that the road is not clear if someone is in that space.

Brilliant idea, although it doesn't excuse checking visually yourself.

If you're referring to my post - the front of my car being beside his drivers door isn't even remotely close to being in his blind spot.

The wing mirrors on my Touareg are really good - no blind spot. The wing mirrors on wide's Prado are bad - nasty blind spot in the worst possible place. So I can lapse into a false sense of security in my car and lose the habit of looking over my shoulder which would be bad when driving wife's car.

I've never worked out why car manufacturers aren't simply forced to include mirrors that cover the blind spots, various designs have been tried at various times by various makers, all seem to work, I guess Joe average driver will be guided by a red light being on or off but can't cope with interpreting the view through a mirror???
