makes for interesting reading and more and more countries are finding the same thing where EV cars are out numbering charge points and power prices are sky rocketing.

https://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/motoring/motoring-features/how-easy-charge-electric-car-25995222

My stepdaughter in the UK has spoken of electricity rates having tripled or better in the last year or so as Russian gas supply has impacted Europe and the UK which will obviously be a factor in both the home and public charging rates stated in the article. This is causing real distress to many Brits.

We are very fortunate here in NZ in not having been exposed to such price hikes in part due to the dominance of renewable generation methods in our grid. The benefit of home charging economies and our typically short journeys make EVs a viable option for most people, particularly those who have PV installed though the lack of public charging availability is becoming problematic as EV numbers increase here. This definitely needs to be addressed or EV uptake will suffer as a result.

My mother complains constantly that what she regards as British involvement in something that does not concern them is costing her a fortune in increased energy prices.

My brother in law received a letter from his electricity supplier advising him that price increases would take his bill to the equivalent of NZ$7500 a year..!

Rob Report: Tesla Will Begin Building the Cybertruck This Year, but You Won’t See Many on the Road Until 2024

...until the first Cybertruck rolls off the line, it’s not unreasonable to be skeptical of any production promises Musk or Tesla make about the vehicle. When the truck debuted in 2019, the executive said it would go into production in 2021. That target was then pushed back to 2022 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Then, last year, Musk said Tesla would finally start building the Cybertruck in 2023. As of now, it appears the third time might really be the charm.

Regardless, it’s easy to see why Musk might be anxious to begin production. The CEO has previously said the wild-looking Cybertruck will be able to tow 14,000 pounds, go zero-to-60 mph in less than three seconds and travel 500 miles on a single charge (although last year, he said some initial specs may change). These claims, as well as a low $100 deposit, are a big part of why the company has received hundreds of thousands of reservations for the vehicle. Despite posting record profits and sales in 2022, Tesla’s stock has performed terribly over the last year, so any boost the Cybertruck might bring would be welcomed.

Of course, if Tesla misses another production target, people just might start to view the Cybertruck the same way they do the perpetually-delayed Roadster—a cool idea unlikely to ever come to fruition. Whenever it does arrive, it will be interesting to see if there’s any excitement left for a vehicle that will be at least a half-decade old at that point.

Saw a Ford Mach-E “out in the wild” yesterday at Auckland Airport. It had a personalised plate (can’t remember what). I didn’t realise they were available yet, unless it was the promotional example that has been doing the rounds for the past few months, and the driver was someone who knows someone, who knows someone, who babysits for the CEO of Ford NZ…

It was no fun driving home in Auckland yesterday afternoon. I would have preferred to be in an F150 Lightning than my Model 3.

I believe there have been a few overseas imports brought in. One of the EV dealers was selling one here in Christchurch (alongside a Model Y Long Range) that was imported from the UK

“ Tesla opens its first Australian Superchargers to non-Tesla EVs, at a hefty price”

https://thedriven.io/2023/01/31/tesla-opens-its-first-australian-superchargers-to-non-tesla-evs-at-a-hefty-price/

So it’s started happening (slowly) in Aus; will be interesting to see if/how this rolls out in NZ (and, if they use the same two-tier charging model, what they charge compared to Chargenet etc).

From a purely selfish point of view, now that Chargenet rates are the same as Tesla SCs, I hope they aren’t in too much of a hurry to open it up here.

I can see why they’d want to, though as some seem to get fairly scant use - I often see no-one using the SCs in Palmerston North; sometimes one, very occasionally two cars charging.

My personal interest is more the other way around - I’m keen on Tesla adding in non-SC chargers to their database, as they have done (or are looking to do?) in some markets so as to allow better trip planning and - more usefully - preconditioning. During most of our 2800 km trip around the SI last month we couldn’t precondition the battery as we weren’t anywhere near a supercharger (to pretend we were heading to one).

What's the current state of play around battery replacements for older EVs, likes of leafs or even Hybrids like say a 2012 Mitsi Outlander etc?
Has there been any progress on this, as last I looked into this you were talking $10,000 - $30,000 for replacement batter packs.

Great to see the newer cars coming out with active cooling on the batteries, given much longer life figures and higher ranges etc.
This or next year will likely be when we switch to either adding a second car (full EV) or trading our existing petrol MPV for a hybrid alternative, maybe even plugin hybrid too.

Struggling to find anything with the boot size of the MPV for when we go camping, or load the boot up with green waste, or bring longer lengths of something home from Bunnings etc.
Current MPV can swallow a 3m length of guttering for example inside the vehicle itself easily.  (I didn't expect that!).

Outlander seems the closest fit I could see or pretend to afford, but some of the reviews here even on those earlier models (2011-2013 etc) are super scary and disappointing.

Please stay on EVs in this topic. There is another for hybrids or you may create one for your question.

Tesla's biggest problem is that 2023 is not 2019....

in 2019 Tesla had an open market, in 2023 its got the F150 lightning, Rivian R1T and the E-Hummer to compete with...

Yeah I hope the Cybertruck doesn't become an albatross around their neck. I wonder how many fingernails Elon has left with which to hold on to Tesla...
