according to the Aussies - 2025

but as far as i know, Tesla themselves haven't announced anything and the picture looks like a mazda 2

That's not what it will look like, lol.

Media outlets are doing their best to jump on the "Tesla headline for clickbait" gravy train.

I am not sure if this has been discussed before, I am looking for suggestions, recommendations, views etc on electric vans and similar. Looking for something to move mobility gear such as mobility scooters . Ideally with reasonably low lift height to enable a ramp to load scooter with a manageable gradient or a load lifter.

LDV has one i think

Also the mass imports of Nissan NV200 (the Nissan Leaf's cousin)

If you are loaded wait for the ID Buzz - that looks amazing but it will cost ya

Nope. It's already been looked at for mobility conversion and seems the floor thickness where the battery is is too thick for easy conversion. There's rumours of a purpose designed vehicle from VW, but who knows.

Nissan has a USA partnership for ten years with BraunAbility building conventional NV200 for use as New York taxis with wheelchair capability. There is a UK business Vic Young doing the same thing for NV200-e electric.

Mobility scooter is different again. I see you are looking at conversion anyway so that's not necessarily a problem.

There is at least one BraunAbility dealer in NZ. Looks like they currently do Ford Custom with side wheelchair access. The Ford Custom electric is not far away from NZ.

Much easier mounting a Leaf motor to a manual gearbox - pull the ICE and the clutch and attach to the gearbox input shaft via a spline adapter. Then select a gear that suits what you need to do that day and put your foot on the go pedal.

How well do the gearboxes stand up to being continuously in one gear? I seem to remember people using Mazda rotaries and their gearboxes as aircraft engines and using just IIRC 3rd gear, but the gears tended to wear out.

Regarding an electric vehicle to handle mobility carts / wheelchairs, that electric van is beautifully engineered, but really doesn't work without a helper; someone who's mobile need to reach well inside for straps and a button.

It's an old problem.

Here's a Mini-cooper EV with hand controls

Carrbuzz: Mini Cooper Electric Gets Disability-Friendly Hand Controls

For people with disabilities, the task of driving is more complicated than it needs to be. Yes, there are companies out there that specialize in outfitting vehicles for people with specific needs but it's often a costly and time-consuming process. Vans and SUVs remain popular choices because of their size, but what if you don't want to drive something large and ungainly?

Well, Mini has just the solution. The company has adapted a Cooper Electric Hardtop for these needs, which "makes zero-emission driving fun in the small car segment available to people with disabilities for the first time". Mini leaned on the expertise of Tina Schmidt-Kiendl, a wheelchair-bound driving experience instructor. As such, the BMW-owned brand fitted the battery-powered Mini with several operating aids.

Instead of a regular floor-mounted pedal, the driver now controls the vehicle with an accelerator ring on the steering wheel. The handbrake has also been replaced with a knob sited next to the tiller

EECA is conducting a survey relating to public EV charging. Have your say here: https://selfserve.decipherinc.com/survey/selfserve/2c7b/230216#?

Which is annoying because one of the things it talks about is AC chargers for on-street parking, which is definitely an issue for some people where off-street parking is limited or non-existent.

I haven't seen any news on it yet but the MG4 is now on the MG NZ website so sounds like it's coming soon. According to driven it's launching in Australia this weekend.
