everettpsycho: I haven't seen any news on it yet but the MG4 is now on the MG NZ website so sounds like it's coming soon. According to driven it's launching in Australia this weekend.

That’s great to see. I’d been planning on taking both the ZS and Atto 3 for a test drive in the next couple of weeks, but the MG4 is far more interesting to us. Hopefully it’s not too long until there are some in the country to try out.

Is it correct that the MG4 has an LFP battery? This would make it more feasible for us to go with a smaller battery, assuming NZ gets these options (though it looks like the smaller battery version is also lower powered).

Drive.com.au: 2023 MG 5 small sedan one step closer to Australia

China's rival for the top-selling Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30 small cars is on track for Australian showrooms by the middle of this year.

The 2023 MG 5 – the growing Chinese car maker's first entrant in the small-car category in six years – has received approval for sale in Australia by motor-vehicle regulators, ahead of first MG showroom arrivals due by July 2023.

Prices are yet to be confirmed for Australia. However if prices in its domestic market of China are a guide, entry-level models may cost less than AU $25,000 drive-away, with top-of-the-range versions closer to AU $30,000 drive-away.

Sounds like in the UK the smaller battery is lfp but the bigger is ncm. Based on the zs we didn't get a choice here and we're only offered the smaller 51kWh in two trims, so there's no guarantee we will even get both ranges.

Seems like MG are taking it to fully charged in Sydney and going that in the Aussie sure, speculation is that might be the launch for it and is why it's suddenly appeared in their website. Assuming the fact it's also appeared in the NZ site they'll be using it to announce both countries.

Thanks for info re LFP; will be interesting to see what gets released here.

After your mention of the website material being up I registered my interest and had a call from the local dealer within an hour - they don't even know the specs they'll get or the pricing, but understand the cars aren't far off being ready for export. But he also was aware of the Au reveal, so imagine we'll know more after that.

Have just done this and I suggest you do.  MG ZS is missing regen braking on applying the brake pedal and the cameras in it were terrible - like 10 years ago tech!  Hopefully they fix this with MG4

A l slightly cautionary, anecdotal tale re MG ZS. One of my brothers has one. Initially ordered the previous version a looong time ago, then changed the order to the ZS when that became available. Got one of the first batch to arrive here. Had for about 2 weeks when something went wrong with the 12v system. Suddenly the car wouldn't start. Don't recall the exact details, but it took around two months or possibly a bit more before they got a part in from overseas to fix the problem. Not a great start. And not exactly confidence building. Fortunately wasn't stuck in the middle of nowhere when it occurred.

@jonathan18 I've had the MG ZS ev since mid 2021 (older version) and it's been brilliant. It's not perfect by any means, but for the purpose we bought it for, it suits us. Feel free to hit me up if you're keen for an extended look/drive and chat about it.

Well, to add to that - and I may have already discussed it in the MG thread - but ours had numerous annoying charging issues, beginning with it needing to have the 12V battery disconnected for a hard reboot on the very first time we tried to fast charge it. Arriving at the Mokau charger there was another ZS already there and chatting with the woman, it was refusing to charge in exactly the same way ours had at Hawera the night before.

Worse still, with less than 3000km on it, it complained of a Motor Fault and is currently at the dealer waiting another 5-ish weeks for a new motor to be shipped out from China. (According to MG there is no actual mechanical fault, it's a computer fault: but the faulty electronics are sealed inside the motor unit and cannot be independently replaced).

Finally, some friends I know from way back in the Vodafone days bought one in September. It was written off when it and all its guts, which were on the floor at the dealership, got flooded out in the first big storm in Auckland a couple of months ago.

I'm in Sydney this weekend so plan on going to fully charged Sydney.

Will be interesting to see some of the EV we only see online.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the MG4 would be at Fully Charged. Hope you get a chance to check it out.

Much easier mounting a Leaf motor to a manual gearbox - pull the ICE and the clutch and attach to the gearbox input shaft via a spline adapter. Then select a gear that suits what you need to do that day and put your foot on the go pedal.

How well do the gearboxes stand up to being continuously in one gear? I seem to remember people using Mazda rotaries and their gearboxes as aircraft engines and using just IIRC 3rd gear, but the gears tended to wear out.

in case you didn't realise most PHEVs have the electric motor between the ICE and the gearbox so when you are in "EV mode", you will be powering the electric motor and changing gears.

i don't have a PHEV so i don't how it feels but the WAG PHEVs eg Audi, VW, Skoda all have their electric motor driving via a dual clutch robotic manual (DSG) which is fascinating

HarmLessSolutions:

EECA is conducting a survey relating to public EV charging. Have your say here: https://selfserve.decipherinc.com/survey/selfserve/2c7b/230216#?

It is a very poorly worded survey. For example, there is no ability to respond for an EV purchased second hand. A number of the other questions had no 'correct' answer available too. It also seems strange a name, address and phone number are required - some surveys require this only if you want to be in the running to win the gift.

MG did a launch there to confirm it's coming but still lacks details for the MG4 with a avague "second half of 2023", NZ won't get all models and no pricing. They are however fast tracking the 72kWh version of the MG ZS that will land mid year at around $65k.
