cyril7: Hi I find the default regen in my MG to be sufficient to single foot drive unless your in a great hurry in town, on the highway single foot is definitely a thing , again unless your hoofing it and want to pull up extra short, but normal driving it works. The highest level I found too aggressive

Cyril

I certainly liked the regen mode in the new Leaf, Kia EV6 and Ioniq 5, cars I tested before buying the A3.

Be surprised to see that in NZ.

Reasons for rejection in the VIRM:

1. A vehicle capable of exceeding a speed of 50km/h and equipped with a steering system (Note 1) with no direct mechanical connection between the driver’s means of control and the wheels, or other means of changing the vehicle’s direction, does not have at least one additional means of steering.

Apologies if this has been recently talked about, but is there any insight of how much longer the rebate is going to be in existence for?

The only info I can find is talking about the changes last year, which is a bit out of date. Not getting into politics, but is it likely to end after the elections later this year?

Also, for those who have purchased an EV/Hybrid recently with the help of the "clean" loans that some banks are offering, were you able to apply that rebate to the loan as soon as you got the money?

I thought I heard it was a victim of Chris Hipkins' 'Policy Bonfire' (media's words, not mine), though I haven't seen a direct mention of it going.

i would hope they update the VIRM. from all accounts everything is in duplicate so there doesn't appear to be any safety issue with is

No, that was the 'Cash for Clunkers' programme, which AFAIK had not actually begun operations yet anyway. The EV rebate is (so far) still on.

The Clean Car Upgrade programme was cut in Hipkins' recent announcement. That's the scheme which was to let people trade-in a dirty car for a clean car (in very simplified terms).

As far as I’m aware, the only portion of the Clean Car system that was tossed on the fire was the bits that helped lower income earners get out of their “gas guzzlers” and into a “clean car”. Not the rebate scheme on new vehicles.

As for after the election. It would be difficult for a National led government to continue with the current “fee-bate” scheme after all the noise they have made about the “ute tax”. That’s not to say there will be nothing. As a private customer (ie not a business), I paid more in GST than I got back in rebate. So an alternative, cost neutral method, would be a capped GST rebate for EVs allowing them to please the ute driving farmers and tradies by removing the “ute tax” portion. Now where did I put Mr Luxon’s number…..

Suffice to say I’m not entering into any deal at the moment where the EV (or PHEV) won’t be delivered by October 2023 (and banking on a rebate).

edit: Clarified an alternative to the fee-bate scheme.

according to john cadogan (well he makes one point and it takes him 30 mins so i didn't listen to the whole thing)

you don't have to pay FBT for EVs ...

that will be a game changer over here

i also made some comments re national in the politics thread - tld;dr - zero chance

Are you talking about Australia?

Not clear from the above but "that will be a game changer over here".  "over here" = NZ?

If you are referring to Australia, your comment does not seem to relate to the text you quoted?

==

Green Party policy is to remove FBT on EVs (as in cars) but as far as I can tell it is not current law. https://www.greens.org.nz/business_tax_breaks_for_clean_transport_options

Nothing about EV's being exempt here https://www.ird.govt.nz/topics/clean-car-discount-scheme

==

The Govt did announce last Tue (14 Mar) that "Bikes, electric bikes and scooters will be added to the types of transport exempted from fringe benefit tax under changes proposed today."

https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/bikes-and-scooters-be-exempt-fbt

But again, nothing there about cars.

That's my only concern. I'd hate to place an order for a new vehicle and find out that the rebate isn't applied. Fingers crossed there's some decent notice before the scheme is cancelled.

how does rear wheel steering fit into this box? (also steer by wire). presumably it has one additional means of steering aka front wheel steering is direct connection.

re lexus - it's possible they have another option of conventional steering as it's the same car as the subaru and toyota which does not use steer by wire

Four wheel steer as seen in things like the Honda prelude was all mechanical, hence fine.

I'm.not aware of any road legal cars that have steer by wire sold in NZ yet. Caterpillar used to make a scraper that had electric steering by means of a toggle switch - was horribly jerry, but as it did about a snails pace at top speed, it didn't matter.

I suspect you are right that we will see the mechanical version of the car for a while, at least until steer by wire matures and the virm is updated.

So the BYD Seal and BYD Han are two separate cars, which is a shame because the Han seems like a sedan version of the Atto 3 and is quite good looking. The Seal looks a bit more upmarket/don't mention the 'T' word.
