GV27:

So the BYD Seal and BYD Han are two separate cars, which is a shame because the Han seems like a sedan version of the Atto 3 and is quite good looking. The Seal looks a bit more upmarket/don't mention the 'T' word.

Tesla?

The Indian mileage testing looks to be extremely generous tbh.

But it's a comprehensive product page. I'm guessing it has the 800v architecture which we might see in a future upgrade for the Atto 3.  In theory the Atto 3 platform is capable of it too but it's fitted for 400v). But the world needs more electric sedans.

I have just returned to NZ after a couple of weeks in Australia, including a roadie between Melbourne and Adelaide. An EV wasn’t available where the pickup and drop off points were different, so we had a RAV4 Hybrid as our rental.

The trip was mainly along the coast (called “The Great Ocean Road”) so wasn’t along the direct highway between the two cities. Although we did detour inland a couple of times to visit particular things, so our travel was mainly along “A” and “B” roads.

Along the way I paid some attention to how I would have fared if I had been driving an EV. I sought out charging facilities, checked out how busy they were and if any of the chargers were OOS.

While the direct route is adequately served by both Tesla SCs and “others”, the path we took relied more on “others” and their availability was patchy. A combination of the chargers being single units and sometimes OOS meant there were portions that may have been borderline achievable. Arriving at the solitary charger with 15% battery remaining to discover it’s not working, is “sub-optimal” to say the least. Combined with travelling during a holiday weekend, meant the chargers that were working, were busy.

None of the accomodation we stayed at had destination chargers (I did look when booking), or the ability to hang a granny charger out the window.

We ventured nowhere near the GAFA, but it’s not ready for prime time EV usage.

That's a shame. Aussie has been delayed for several years by conservative governments and the coal lobby. This should improve as the federal government is now ALP and the states all have ALP governments but for NSW (who have an election soon). Not to say the ALP aren't above taking coal money, too......but there would be a lot more fuss about if they failed to support more EV charging.

The out of service thing is annoying. I'd be interested to know why, how and for how long....which you won't know, of course.

Batman:

this Lexus is pretty much a video game. the steering wheel is not connected to the wheels ... 100% steer by wire

https://www.motoringnz.com/news/2023/3/21/lexus-rz-electric-set-to-land-in-may

"Attractions beyond the rakish shape could be the count of innovative features such as steering-by-wire and the option, in some other markets from mid-2023 and set - Lexus NZ said today - to come to NZ at some point, of a Tesla-style yoke instead of a conventionally round steering wheel."

Other reports say round wheel comes with conventional steering, drive by wire has yoke. So if NZ is initially getting round wheel drive by wire won't be a VIRM issue.

I have seen quite a few reviewers mention that the 'Batman' tires on the BYD atto 3 are a little lacking in grip in the wet and other mentioning replacing the standard tires for something else.

It seems BYD must have been listening, I noticed a press release from Contintental Tires saying that BYD has chosen their tires for the Atto 3.

Alas not here it seems. We are stuck with the Batman tyres, which TBH and I will qualify this with having only drive about 4K in my Atto3 and the longest being a trip from Welly to PN andd back, the tyres didn't seemt o be an issue. But I do see folks on the Atto3 forum talk about replacing their tyres.

A very entertaining review of Mahindra XUV400 2023. Performance is excellent the reviewer is not impressed with nearly everything else and says wait for the next model. The 2023 could be NZs cheapest SUV EV if it arrives here. I think it will work well for some people.

BYD are set to release a new model vehicle (Seagull) which will come with a sodium-ion battery (SIB) option and could be significantly cheaper than other vehicles. Depending of course on if it comes to NZ and what the dealers decide to do with the extent of their markups.

Edit: $$ prices are US
