I am currently investigating our first EV purchase while we can still get good $ in trade-in or trademe private sale for our family ICE car as it has plenty of warranty years left and couple of years free service left along with increase self-consumption of our Solar PV plant with free AC charging.  I ruled out Nissan Leaf, both models of Tesla's, BYD, Mercedes EQA, EQB 250 and MG. BYD prob came closest to being meeting most of the criteria but it's got a long way to refine a lot of things perhaps in v2. Nissan was least preferred followed by Tesla. Currently the front runners are the BMW iX1 and Volvo XC40 Recharge Ultimate P8. Going for a test drive this weekend.

That’s quite a wide price range.

What about

Polestar 2 (equivalent to XC40),

Ford Mach-E,

Skoda Enyaq?

I’m a fan of LiFePO4 battery chemistry until something different (better) comes along. But that limits it to BYD and Tesla (RWD) at the moment.

Linuxluver:

I received an email the other day from Opel NZ offering a double-rebate on the Mocca-e EV. That appears to make the price fairly reasonable for a 50kWh battery EV.

From their web site:

"Opel Mokka-e SRi with double rebate

That discount brings it down so it’s a bit cheaper than the entry level model (can’t imagine they’ll sell many of that one at this stage!), but its still a fair amount of dough for a fairly compact (4.1m) and relatively low-powered car (100kW / 260Nm) with a modest range. That said, it’s pretty good looking in photos… Personally I think I’d find it hard to justify buying the Opel over the Atto 3 with its larger size, dedicated EV platform, LFP battery, greater power (150kW) etc. (Then again, there may well be people willing to pay >$90k for an Enyak over the other more reasonably priced options…)

NZ Autocar reviewed the Mokka-e a few months back: https://www.autocar.co.nz/2022-opel-mokka-e-sri-review/

I did not consider the Polestar 2 because as you say it's the sedan version of XC40. With 2 young kids still in their kids' seats for next 6 and 8 years atleast, we do like the height advantage of SUV to taking kids in and out. If I had an extra $15k, the only Sedan and EV car I would like to have is the BMW i4 edrive40 which to me is the best EV in terms of price, range and features.

LiFePO4 has certain advantages but there are a lot of EV using the Li Ion NMC batteries from 2014 onwards that still show close to 100% SOH and have not caught fire because the BMS and cells are of good quality.

I won't touch VW group's cars at all for a long time after horrible experience with Skoda Fabia vRS I had and both Skoda/VW HQ and local dealer's support in getting the issue resolved which costed us $6k. It was a known issue worldwide around 2015, but VW group refused to come to party as I had not taken the car for service after warranty expired to Skoda dealer. Legally VW had no ground, but I did not have the time for courts at that time in my life.

Kia EV6 was also a good strong contender but the roofline at back is low. Ford Mach-E's digital speedometer in front of driver is too wide and not very high. It looks weird with no design alignment to the infotainment screen or rest of cockpit.

How about its cousin, the Ioniq 5? As you’ll note from my review, it wasn’t for me, but its rear seat room and boxy shape struck me as good for a family.

I agree about the i4, if money was no object. I’m hoping the electric version of the 3 series makes an appearance outside China sooner rather than later.

The Ioniq 5 is the best looking EV hands down. The 2023 model improved the ride quality a little with a better tuned suspension but still not good. The biggest thing keeping me away from Ioniq 5 though is the features I am getting already for $18k RRP cheaper and more in both the iX1 and XC40 P8 like AWD, twin motors, heat pump, heated front seats, better audio system, bunch of driving safety features, memory seats, HUD with augmented reality, sunroof with retractable blind and few more.

These are all included in the $98k RRP in both BMW and Volvo. The same trim in Ioniq 5 is $118k. Granted that $118k also gets you front cooled ventilated seats and 13kWh bigger battery but for $118k I can get the i4 edrive40 and even more. The BMW looks even more attractive as I can get a further $4500 off RRP so a decent chunk of like a clean car discount for me somewhat through negotiation.

It would be great if you can give your test drive impressions of the iX1 and XC40 in the test drive thread.
I must say I’m envious that you can look at an EV circa $100K for a first.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/300851807/nissan-leaf-and-mazda-atenza-in-garage-fire--which-one-started-it

My guess is the Mazda was driven with the handbrake partially activated, and once in the garage - with no cooling airflow anymore - the heat was enough to ignite a nearby rubber seal and the rest is history.

The number of people I bump into that believe EV's are dangerous because they catch on fire makes me want to scream.

....... The number of people I bump into that believe EV's are dangerous because they catch on fire makes me want to scream.

And reports such as this one by Stuff serve to foster that misinformation by the wording of the headline and particularly the inclusion of the link to the AKL harbour bridge Tesla incident. This media driven FUD is disingenuous at best and all too common in MSM, perhaps as a favour to their ICE advertising clients.

of all the ones you listed the Kia GT Line is like a Merc S class inside (ok I haven't owned one so what lol). I would get the kia GT line Awd in a heartbeat if the entire south island has good fast charging, and I don't have degradation anxiety. Yes it's real for me. can't charge to 100, 80 is not so bad but worse than 50%, can't leave it at 100, oh no don't fast charge, fdss me seriously!

I have missus, 2 teens a pre teen and a small dog. They all fit fine in the Kia if I remove the floor board of the boot even the giant dog crate fits.

I hadn't come across the Zeekr brand before (apparently another Geely brand), but their new X model looks decent - in terms of aesthetics, performance, and bang for buck. Will be interesting to see if it ever reaches NZ (and, if so, at what price point).

Zeekr X Goes On Sale, Offers 348 Miles Of Range For Just $27,600Dual motor: 315kW/543NM; 0-100 3.7 seconds

RWD: 200kW, 0-100 5.8 seconds

Won't bother quoting the range (66 kWh NMC battery in both) as it's CLTC based.

These's some fantastic quality data there:

Well done NZTA/WK 😡

Shame the list doesn’t include the money collected from the “high emitting” vehicles.

And the GST gained in the sale of each EV (GST registered businesses aside). In my case, the GST paid was greater than the rebate received.

If you consider that an $80K Tesla is essentially a $50K car with a $30K battery, then the gst on the battery alone is just under $4000.

Edit: The number is Eclipse Cross PHEVs is interesting. Obviously a popular vehicle.

Saw this alpha wolf in a youtube. Looks like it might finally be a replacement for the falcon since theyre doing a single cab option with a moderate bed size.
