PolicyGuy:

These's some fantastic quality data there:

$75k paid out to an unknown number of vehicles of unknown make or model

Well done NZTA/WK 😡

They may be embargoed models they can’t yet mention the name of, but still eligible for the rebate. If so, and I have no way of knowing, it’s good to see they are not omitted from the OIA request.

Our trip to Auckland today was worth it from Cambridge. Got $3k off in negotiation for iX1 M spec from one of the three BMW dealers there and got good price for trade in for our CX-5. It is a 4 month wait though. Hamilton dealer wouldn’t budge off the ticket price. The Auckland dealer showed me that the price for iX1 will jump to $109k in coming months with number of options also removed which will cost extra moving forward but currently all the option are included at an intro price. The 22kW/7.2kW BMW Gen 3 wall box EVSE was also throw in for free as part of the deal.

That’s awesome! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

While I haven’t tried the iX1, in the BMW EV I have driven (i4), the quality was noticeable.

I just wonder how spacious this is but they are very well built things.

it says AWD but how many motors does it have and how does it distribute power?

It is AWD and dual motor. AFAIK, it's FWD all the time if AWD is not required. The iX1 planted so well on the roads surface we tested it on. A lot more space left for both me and my wife in front for our legs after having a rear facing and front facing kids' seat behind us which is where the CX-5 was struggling, and both my wife and I end up with uncomfortable rides after 20 minutes. The extended seats are also a huge comfort point along with the built in massager with lumbar support for both front seats.

I was intrigued by an article in todays U.K. Daily Telegraph:

“Interest in electric cars has slumped as electricity prices and falling petrol costs have erased the benefits of owning a plug-in.

Searches for battery-powered vehicles have dropped by two thirds since early 2022, according to Britain’s biggest online car marketplace AutoTrader.

Interest has waned because of surging electricity prices and the end of Government grants for plug-in vehicles. Combined with falling petrol prices, it has narrowed the price advantage per mile of driving an electric vehicle.

High upfront costs are also proving a hurdle, given the cost of living crisis. New battery-powered cars are now on average 37pc more expensive than petrol and diesel models, AutoTrader said in its Road to 2030 report.”

UK power prices are off the chain at the moment.

From the below; "However, from 1st of October, the actual cost of electricity per kWh will stand at 52p per kWh, but with the new Energy Price Guarantee, it will average 34p per kWh (exact amount varies depending on tariff and other factors)."

https://energyguide.org.uk/average-cost-electricity-kwh-uk/

uncapped: 52 pence = NZ$1.05

capped: 34 pence = NZ$0.68

Business don't get access to the capped rate (I think). So public DC charging can be really expensive in the UK. To cherry pick on of the msot expensive operators, shell recharge charges 85pence / kWh for rates above 150kW. Works out to $1.71/kWh, more than double what chargenet fees in NZ are for the same service (NZ$0.85c/kWh)

Even for residential. My marginal price of electricity here is $0.1689/kWh. A quarter of what is common in the UK.

Having to pay 4x as much for power would sure impact my decision if I was shopping for an EV in the UK. (for comparison, petrol is about NZ$3.85/L for 95RON, so about 1.5 times what it is here).

I'm not really clued up on why power is so expensive in the UK, but do know the price skyrocketed since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

[Edit] to add a little math.

40kWh leaf at 16.1kWh/100km. At my power cost this is NZ$2.737. In the UK it would be  NZ$10.95.

Corolla hybrid at 4.2L/100km. In NZ that is $10.5/100km. In the Uk that NZ$16.17

Clearly the cost savings from going EV are a lot more in NZ

I was looking at the specs, and the BMW site says it has  a steptronic transmission with gear paddles - is that correct?

That is the specs for the petrol X1 version which has a 7 speed steptronic with dual clutch. The electric iX1 version does have one paddle to the left behind the steering wheel labelled 'Boost' which provides extra 30kW of power for 10 seconds for overtaking and fun.

Just as well we don't live in the UK then 😉

I haven't really looked at EV motor specs so I'm guessing a bit here.

One reason might be how the power is measured. For example with an ICE engine you need to know what spec is used to derive the power output, SAE, DIN etc.

Another area where there could be a difference is the power curve. Power is a product (result) of torque X RPM. One may have a better power curve while the peak power might be the same one produces higher torque at lower RPM hence more power at lower RPM.

Or else one manufacturer might be "embellishing" their figures or someone has stuffed up a conversion factor somewhere.

Also the obvious factors are differing weights and drag coefficients.

Have you looked at the weights? I haven't, but the BMW might be heavier and less aerodynamic

Where did you get the 9 seconds from for BMW?

BMW AWD with twin motors is 5.6 seconds ($96,900 + ORC). Kia EV6 GT is 5.2 seconds ($112,990 + ORC)
