If a motorist gets blinded they run the risk of hurting themselves in a crash - or another cyclist. It seems the only valid way to protect your wife is for her to stop cycling at night.

You express a worrying attitude with regard to mutual road use and the safety of others that makes me wonder (hopefully without good reason) that you might engage in behavior that is risky to others with little or no thought of consequences to anyone but your self/wife.

If a motorist gets blinded so much that they sharply veer across the road over a lane of traffic and hit someone on the edge of the other side of the road while passing them at at least 50kmh, then they sure as heck were not within the 10 to 20 meters range of the light, nor were they a competent driver to start with.

Its just another case of the "I see cyclists on my road and I hate it" mentality.

I am also not worried about taking the lane when the road is narrow, or, as typical here, through roadworks, and letting cars build up behind, instead of being forced off the road by cars trying to pass too close.

The road is for everyone, and cyclists have an equal right to it.

I'll agree with you on sharing the road, and I'm happy for a cyclist to use a lane where it is safer to do so than squeeze off to the side.

The issue is with continuing to exhibit a light that is inappropriate for on-road use.

I am a cyclist, I have 3 road bikes and a MTB and cycle regularly so don't stereotype me. Its not about us and them its about being responsible for your actions which you clearly aren't.

I actually can't figure out whether your posts are for real, or whether you are just trolling to get a reaction.

If you are for real, then you aren't doing anyone - including other cyclists - any favours.

It's not about whether or not cyclists have a right to be on the road. It's about behaviour that creates a gross safety hazard for other road users, including other cyclists. If a driver is driving late at night and is suddenly blinded, which very powerful lights designed for off road can do, then it could be lethal. Suddenly they are in over a tonne of metal travelling at 50km/h and and unexpectedly can't see the road, what is in front of them or where they are going. If this happens, it could very well be your (or the wife you profess to care about) that is the one taken out as a consequence. And it's not just "a second", it can take a while for night vision to properly return. And, actually, it would be your fault not the drivers.

As for road hogging, that's also a very selfish attitude. If I'm driving a vehicle where I hold up other traffic (say, for the sake of argument, I'm pulling a caravan or a large trailer) then, when I realise it's happening and as soon as I have a safe opportunity, I pull over and let them pass. Saying that you are just going to putt along at a slow pace in the middle of the lane and stuff the queue of people caught behind you is highly selfish. Worse, as they get more frustrated, they are more inclined to so something a bit "marginal" to get around you - and the consequences for you or someone else could be severe.

I think if you really want motorists to show you some consideration, the least you can do is show some consideration to other road users yourself.

The narrowness of the road, perhaps because of the roadworks, is the reason that there isn't a safe opportunity to pull back over and let drivers pass. Last time I read the cycle section of the road code it agreed.

Would also like to point out something that hasn't been mentioned so far: head mounted bike lights are extremely useful for seeing around a corner you intend to turn, handlebar lights can't do this and having to veer out into the middle of traffic to avoid a hazard just after you turn isn't exactly safe (or even easy). Cars don't need to care about small hazards on the road surface, whereas bike users might end up without a face because of a small rock/glass/drain/pothole/etc.

You mount blinding safety hazards on the front of your car to see in front of you. So because some morons don't dip their headlights should they have all of their headlights taken away? Should people indiscriminately label all headlights as inherently unsafe and of no use to anyone? There are people out there who can't sit in a chair safely, should we ban chairs?

You've made some short bold statements in this thread, but being bold about it doesn't make it fact.
