Yes I have been told by the dealership they will be replacing that type 1 ccs for the new one at the end of this Month

BMW did the socket swap last Wednesday,so it took a wee while longer than first thought.Coombes Johnstone did a good job on the Mod and I am going to try a fast charge soon ,before I head off x country.

The above advertisement is for a NZ-New 2017 BMW i3 Range Extender 94 Ah.

The opening price is a mere $30,000 but bidders are increasing this amount steadily! The reserve price hasn't yet been met, so it could be $60,000 - $70,000?

However, with dozens of watchers, perhaps this is the way to sell a car on TradeMe because it has gathered a lot of interest and may sell if the reserve price isn't too high!

And if you want to know why the new price of the BMWi3 of $50,000 (US) and around $90,000 in NZ, absolutely isn't worth it, take a look at this video:

This video suggests that you're going to have huge depreciation if you buy a new BMW i3, so the only answer is to buy it on the second-hand market. The same will probably apply to the Hyundai Kona 64 kWh which for the elite model costs new around $80,000!

The 2019 refresh is what we can expect from a Mini Cooper EV; perhaps a little more range due to less frontal area, but hard to see if Mini will price it by Kwh like VW are talking about doing.

Looks like its got the old ccs1 plug and has been written off.

I wonder how experienced they are at repairing the i3, given the construction is so different?

They claim it is "bolt on parts only" i.e not frame damage, but It'll certainly be buyer beware

I agree that it would pay to be very careful when buying a vehicle like this. And could it really now be in "a perfect condition"?

The advertisement says:

Had an accident and been written off by insurer. Has been repaired at the best panel shop in West Auckland to the factory spec as shown. Invoices available. Was bolt on parts only.

The BMW i3 has a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) body frame, and some people have been put off buying the i3 because of the difficulties and delays in repairing such frames and the lack of specialist places to do this outside of Auckland.

Why would it have been written off by the insurer if it could be repaired back to a "perfect condition" with bolt-on parts only? Some insurance companies may not be happy insuring vehicles with specialist body frames like this?

The big issue for me is its go a ccs1 rapid charger port which few ?none of nz rapid chargers use.

Charge not used to have some ccs1 ports originally but they were converted to ccs1 several years ago.

I'm not sure the sellers know this..

It seems to be NZ new, reregistered. If it's NZ new, then BMW may swap to CCS2.

From the above:

BMW constructed the i3 in two segments, the Drive Module and the Life Module. The Drive Module contains the electric motor, suspension, lithium ion battery and is the backbone of the car. This module is made mostly of aluminum and its repair process is very similar to other aluminum chassis components that BMW has been producing and repairing for years.

The Life Module is the occupant cabin and its backbone is made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic. This frame and roof are all CFRP where as attached to the sides of the i3 are composite plastic panels. These panels are designed to absorb what would normally dent a metal car and pop back into shape. Added bonus: your i3 isn’t’ gonna rust.

Fortunately, BMW states that the cost of repairs for the BMW i3 are similar to a BMW 1 Series. This is intriguing given that once a carbon fiber piece is broken, there just is no repairing of it. The entire part/body panel must be replaced. Nonetheless BMW knew the implication of building a car of CFRP and thus designed specific cut away sections in the i3. These are defined segments that when cut will allow the technician to remove the damaged CFRP piece and then bond the new CFRP segment back in with glue.

So, in the case of the vehicle we are discussing here, I guess it depends on whether the main damage was to the drive module or the life module and just what is meant by "bolt-on parts only". Perhaps repairs weren't needed for the "life module" carbon fibre reinforced plastic?

I think that bmw nz offers this service (and cost) is something that needs to be confirmed by seller or make it clear to potential purchasers that you CANT use the rapid chargers in use.

Otherwise someone could get badly burnt.

That the seller doesn't mention these issues is a mark against them in my opinion.

There were some questions and answers about the rapid charger port on the auction as follows:

Q. What type of charging plug does the car have, CCS1 or CCS2?

A. Both, as on every I3 2:22 pm, Mon 8 Oct

Q. That picture looks like ccs1 rapid charger port which few rapid chargers use. Can bmw swap to ccs2?

A. Our rule is to keep everything original. We have zero tolerance for workarounds, mods, performance tuning, installations of towbars, etc. everything is kept as coming out from factory .Ones you own it, you can do your changes. 12:34 pm, Tue 9 Oct

Anyway, the vehicle (regn LRE165) sold on 11 October for $46,000, which was pretty good considering that it had been written off by an insurance company.
