Are you going to tell us what you got and what you got it for? 😛

Rather not state brand - starts to get a bit too close.

It's a Euro car - base model plus one factory-fitted package. The verifiable all-up on-road price was $54,890. They offered to discount it to $52,990 over the phone, then by email, without any prompting and before I had been in there.

Then I went in for them to assess the trade-in - a small 2014 Euro car, 55,000 km which we had from new. The retail value according to Trademe was about $15,000 (but I know no-one pays asking price on Trade).

They assessed the trade, came back pointing out its defects (mainly normal wear and tear for a seven year old car) and said the retail value of the car was $9,000. I said I disagreed and pointed out my observations from Trademe.

All this was designed to lower my expectations - as I knew they would do. Said they would give us $4,500 for the trade which resulted in a change-over price of $48,490. This was when I started to talk about going home to consult my wife, other dealers etc

He asked the question about ‘what can I do today’ and what changeover price was I looking for. I said I doubted he could get there, he said ‘try me’. I told him Mrs Code and I had discussed it and didn’t want to pay more than $45k.

He said ‘give me a minute’ and went away for 10-15 minutes. Came back and after a bit of preamble said $46,000. I said ‘done’ and we shook hands.

Maybe I could have pressed him further but there’s a point where you have judge what’s fair and what further pushing may start to piss people off (maybe that doesn’t matter in this situation but not my style). Right or wrong, I was very happy with where we had got to.

Around $6-7k off rrp or about 12% is pretty good in my books especially for an Euro.

I really wonder how much their margins are or could by the fact they are selling at cost and only trying to earn from dealer rebates.

Anyway we recently purchased a CX9 with a driveway price of about $71-$72k. I know a year ago that a mate got a run out deal for the previous years model for $64k.

So I went in at $65k and was promptly rejected, so I went home and texted the dealer that I can do $65k with a free towbar or $66k with cost price accessories.

They called back and a deal was made for $66k with cost price accessories.

I still wonder if I could’ve had a better deal.

I wouldn't buy a new mazda until they bring back the touch screen . Using apple carplay without  touch screen, and having to use the wheel would be a chore. The mazda 3 I drive has both a touch screen and wheel, and would be horrible to use if I had to rely on the wheel.

Someone in japan has fitted a handy little button to my Mazda 3 (Axela) so I can use the touch screen for carplay while driving.

I guess we never know that - just need to be satisfied that we feel the deal is fair.

I like how this thread turned from new car availability to a contest as to who can get the most off a new car

Good for you.

I agree whole heartedly.

A good deal in my mind is where both parties walk away happy.

You never know when you might have to deal with that person again. (It might not be in the same role it may be something completely different)

I like how this thread turned from new car availability to a contest as to who can get the most off a new car.

The thread started on some cars being in short-supply.  That lead to discussion on prices - high prices or premiums being sought for late-models of those cars, which lead to a video on negotiation of a car purchase and getting a discount. Then to cars not in short-supply still being available at discounted prices.

Has drifted but not too far OT - still about supply, demand, price. Not a contest.

let me recap. you went in wanting 15k off

they tell you max 9k off

you walk out with 7k off.

you see what the dealer did there.

they are pros.

but it to really know the answer - how much are they selling your car for.

The $9k off was a run out deal that my mate got a year ago for the previous years car. It has a red leather that apparently no one liked, although the rest is mostly the same.

Still, it would be nice to walk out with a $9k off.

Is this dealer on Trademe taking the piss on the recent supply shortage?

https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/toyota/listing/3103534676

List price for a new RAV4 Hybrid Limited on the Toyota site is $54990

Is the Trademe car totally standard - no extras - so that you are truly comparing apples and apples? I’m not saying you’re not, just interested (and not familiar with RAV4).

It appears to have a stone guard on the bonnet and probably has a towbar fitted. So say $2000 for the stone guard and $6000 for the towbar and you are back to the new car price! (/s).

Re that $63,950 Rav4, it is gone from trade-me now, so there is a decent change it is sold

New that car is $54,990. Tinted Stonegaurd is $193 fitted, and towbar is $1,133 fitted (actually pritty good prices for dealer fitted accessories. So lets say $56,316 new value.

I'm guessing that the dealer built some room for negotiation into their price (unlike toyota's firm fixed prices, perhaps they were willing to negotiate down to say $51k).

A $3,700 premium doesn't actually seem that bad to skip a 6 month waiting list. Lets say your rav4 hybrid has been written off in a crash, and you really liked the car compared to other competitors in the market (CX-5 etc..) Your choice is between placing an order with Toyota and renting a car for 6 months, settling for a car you don't like as much, or paying the $4k perimum.

If you want to see some really amusing asking prices, search out fairly new Land-cruiser 200's.

Yes the car is not sold out new. Yes the v8 diesel isn't going to be offered on the 300 series.

But the 300 series is going to be announced in a week or two, and the leaked specs shows the v6 diesel makes more power, more torque than the outgoing v8. It is also a decent bet is is lighter and a heap more fuel efficient. People go on about the 4.5L v8 being under-stressed giving great reliability, But that engine did have a list of well known reliability issues (injectors, dusting etc.).

Interesting snippet.

We have a Volvo XC70, formerly a press car used by Volvo when the Ocean Race took place here.

About a year ago we were offered $15,000 for it by the dealer. This week they offered us $9,000 more than that!
