lxsw20:

I get the point that you're unlikley to strike so many manuals these days but man some of you are overestimating how "hard" it is to learn manual.

It's not hard to learn, but if you're not used to anything other than auto and you're standing in front of it, it's a problem in certain situations.

Again, if you think you are a skilled driver, in a foreign country, using the opposite lane and in heavy traffic, rent a manual transmission vehicle without GPS and with a manual transmission. If you can deal with that, you can deal with anything.

Or you could make it easier and drive more safely. It's not a competition or some hero contest.

Driving is safer when you can handle any situation. This is called human factors. That's why, according to the EASA guidelines, the pilots of the big automatic aircraft now also have to prove that they have a regular class rating for motor gliders, after the heroes caused various accidents with the small things, because they don't have an automatic, but have to be flown manually and the heroes were overtaxed with it.

Citation required that driving is safer when you can drive a type of car you are not driving.

Take a driving safety course and you'll know.

So you have no actual citation, just a reckon. Good oh.

johno1234: I expect that a manual car is the low cost poverty pack option so will not have fancy stuff such as ACC.

Apparently, even the horizon is wider with a manual gearbox ... 3.65 million $ each car.

BTW: I pay 100€/yr for a manual 10 shift 4x4 HERE (where the insurance fee for automatic is even more expensive than for manual transmission). Now it‘s up to you … too many accidents in general in NZ with both gears? Have you ever driven at 300 km/h on the Autobahn, legally? 😁

And my son is currently getting his driving licence, in a big, very busy city with 2 million inhabitants, four-lane roads, yep on an Audi with ... -guess it- … manual transmission.

This thread is about a car for a young kiwi learner yet you continue to drag it off into irrelevance with comments about foreign insurance and supercars?

I’ve already pointed out that NZ AA Insurance has $1 premium difference between auto and manual Corolla.

Yes, a young Kiwi driver you want to tell "the right thing" right away. I already said that your insurance premiums for both vehicle classes are expensive, why do you think that is?

Cool story. No relevance.

I find this glider requirement comment very hard to believe. Got a cite for that one either?

That's why my recommendation for a beginner driver is: a cheap, Japanese small car with a manual gearbox. :-)

No, just read the EASA regulations - I‘m not your entertainer but a certified pilot. Wanna see my licence next?

ROTFLMAO! EASA regulations are many thousands of pages.

Yet another claim that you can’t back up with a cite. .

“Read the EASA regulations” indeed! That’s so funny.

Sorry to the OP @Mark as this is now way off topic.

Summary seems to be Japanese import car, smaller in size so is easier to manoeuvre, presumably with a good safety feature rating. Likes of Toyota Corolla or Mazda etc I’d be tempted with an aqua if it’s a car I could be driving a bit myself too as a second family car.

Over to you as a parent to set budget and transmission style. Remembering all cars require basic upkeep costs like tyres, petrol, insurance, registration, warrants, servicing etc, which most likely the parent will cover.

I’d be pushing the lack of insurance cover implications if they go outside their license terms - carrying friends as passengers before legally allowed to/staying out past curfew cutoff times etc too 😉

All the best for the license tests 👍

On the subject of if a "manual is better" to learn in, I would say yes, its pretty hard to learn in but doing your drivers exam only comes later, then its all about the road rules etc.. You first need to learn to drive! A manual would be better in my opinion as you really need to master that clutch, pulling away on hills without rolling back etc.  Sure learning to drive in an auto is much easier. If learn to drive in a manual it forces you to understand your vehicle, engine revs etc. Especially cornering and gearing down.
