It seems a common thing in Europe that when braking unexpectedly (even if not an 'emergency' brake) that they put their hazards on.

For example, joining the back of a traffic jam or congestion on a motorway - they will put their hazards on to indicate they are stopping where you wouldn't normally expect them to stop. I though it was quite a good custom. Another good thing they do is when the motorways are congested, the cars in the 'fast' lane pull over as far as they can to the left (would be the right here) and the cars in the lane next to them move as far as is safe to their right (would be left here) so that if needed, emergency service vehicles can get down in between. I can only imagine if we did that here, some entitled plonker would drive straight up the middle :/

I do the hazard lights when stopping at the head of unexpected queues. Some vehicles also activate the hazards under emergency breaking as a matter of course.

I was driving north from Morere toward Gisborne on Tuesday. I'd come that way southbound a few hours earlier and there were some roadworks with loose chip and a 30kph speed limit.....with cones everywhere and signs.

On the return trip, we got there just after some fool had ignored all the signs and the speed limit and rear-ended someone.......and then crashed into the hillside. Both cars were totalled. The emergency services had only just been called and other drivers passing had stopped to control traffic as one lane was blocked by a wrecked car. It was getting dark fast..... It didn't look like anyone was seriously injured.....airbags hanging out everywhere.

You'd have to be a moron to drive at high speed through fresh quarterchip in a 30kph zone on a blind curve....

I have video from my dashcam of the aftermath....

It doesn't seem, it is - especially when there is no speed limit. Imagine what happens when one arrive with 200+ km/h to a traffic jam end on the autobahn without any warning.

This is mandatory by law since a few month and when an emergency vehicle or ambulance has been blocked due to your misbehaviour, you'll have to expect a considerable fine when emergency/firefighter crew reports your license plate to the police including the dashboard cam file(s).

I'd always wondered if drivers could be fined for holding up emergency vehicles. I saw a real facepalm instance of that a few months back, but unfortunately was not running a dashcam. I was in the left lane as I entered the Victoria Park flyover, heading south on SH1. In the right lane ahead of me, a car was holding up a cop with its lights and sirens on that had flown past me moments earlier. The speed limit there is 80k and the driver must have been doing 60k. Other cars just kept passing on the left. As I got closer, I made the decision to hang back so that the slow driver could move over to the left lane which, eventually, they did (I'm such a goddamn hero btw). At the very least, that driver needs to be fined. If your response to a cop behind you is to panic and slow right down then you don't really deserve the privilege of driving.

I once had the misfortune to find myself in front of a police car with lights on that narrow winding section of SH1 between Taupo and Turangi.

I was towing a boat trailer (without the boat).

I immediately put my left indicator on, but couldn't find a place to pull over for some distance.

The cop actually didn't help much. He was so close to the back of the trailer that I didn't want to risk stopping quickly. If the boat had been on the trailer I wouldn't have been able to see him.

Unless the lane you're in is the only one with your intended exit. I've had more than one hoon toot me because I was doing 100 and not 120 in the only lane that exits to the city.

I'll be honest, first time this happened to me was when I was a kid on restricted simply because I panicked and was always told to slow down and pull over for cops. I thought the cop was after me for something since the left lane was completely empty and he didn't put his lights on until he was right behind me. I wasn't until I moved left I realised he wasn't after me and zoomed off somewhere else.

I hated towing the boat on that stretch of SH1, one time I was towing North up the Bulli Point section and had a muppet behind me tooting and flashing his lights for meto stop pull over and let him pass, yeah right if I wanted to early launch into the lake I could pull over. When I reached the bottom the muppet couldnt wait 20 seconds to allow me to pull over ( I was indicating) he went past and deliberately cut me off. He had kids in the car.

Of course, while we're making sweeping generalisations, it would come as no surprise that not a soul on GZ has ever broken any traffic law.

That does pose a problem though with your generalisation: What if the GZ member drives a ute, SUV or is a tradie?

I can help with this. When I was younger and less sensible, I broke traffic laws in both utes and vans. Of course this was in the b.g. era

And trucks.

Who of course have programs pointing out the bad driving of car owers while they themselevs are such good drivers because the do it for a living of course.

Never mind the one overtaking our ute on a bend who faced with another truck suddenly appearing the other way, shoved us off the road.

And of course, men, who may drive badly when young but are of course perfect from then on.

I freely admit I am not a particularly good driver at all, and never have been.

But I do like the keep left, do not drive in any lane other than left unless passing or a lunatic. At the speed limit - you are not the best, the fastest, the whatever...just an a***e unless you move over.

I hate that getting onto the Sthn motorway from Nthwestern means being immediately in right most lane, who came up with that idiocy? The trying to get over several lanes as quickly as possible while cars whizz along next to you, no doubt saying look at her in the right....sigh.
