Ford adjusts price of F150 lightning lowering the price for premium:

CNBC: The new starting prices for the Ford F-150 Lightning will range from $54,995 for an entry-level Pro model to $92,995 for a Platinum Black trim.
The price adjustments come as EV companies attempt to balance slower-than-expected consumer demand with profits.

Imo the real story is here is American car companies are really bad at exporting. It's an excellent vehicle with keen buyers all over the world imo and no way to buy one locally in most of the world supported by a dealer or not.

F150 performance rally variant one-off Ford rally R&D vehicle:

The paint job in the photos looks silly to me but what a car that would be.

Well for here, the UK and others, there's the whole "right-hand drive" business.

There's never been a production vehicle that has had fully "steer by wire" for the front wheel, no steering shafts connected to any axles. Obviously a steering shaft coupled to the front wheels makes things a little more complex, and there will likely be other components that need moving.

Front wheel assist on the front wheels is popular.

A number of concept vehicles and race cars have had no steering shafts.

A number of vehicles have had rear wheel "steer-by-wire", because it makes sense if you have 4 wheel steering.

The 2013 Nissan Infiniti Q50 came close to solely steer-by-wire, but had a backup steering shaft.

When it jumped, it did look a bit "hard" on landing, dues to its weight.

I'm aware. I just consider this another aspect of not good at export. I do agree that particular aspect adds to the design and manufacture load.

Also, bigger vehicles of the American kind have never been that big in Europe & Asia, and not just because of high road taxes on big engines.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. He did hint that the car's precise location was being sent to China.

Which is not surprising, but if you're a three letter agency is very handy.

At this point you just have to throw up your hands and say "20 years ago privacy died."

Not just BYD, it's a whole bunch of them...

‘Privacy Nightmare on Wheels’: Every Car Brand Reviewed By Mozilla — Including Ford, Volkswagen and Toyota — Flunks Privacy Test

Thank you for the link the Mozilla article, a useful reminder

What I found disappointing in the Mozilla article is that it does not appear they requested the data being collected they simply looked at the polices and what one signs away. GDPR enshrines right of access to data, right to be forgotten, right to restrict processing and on and on. Mozilla could have got an employee in Europe with a modern Euro car e.g. a VW and requested all the data collected and what it is being used for

With GDPR one could argue there is more confidence in privacy and data collected than US, China, Japan, Korea etc

For comparison of Evergrande’s US $340 billion debt, New Zealand's GDP is US $250 billion.

AP: Police detain executive at China Evergrande’s EV unit. Property sector shows fresh signs of distress

A top executive of China Evergrande’s electric vehicle company has been detained by police in the latest sign of trouble for the world’s most heavily indebted property developer.

China Evergrande New Energy Vehicle announced the detention of Liu Yongzhuo, its vice chairman and an executive director, in a notice Monday to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
...
Evergrande has been in crisis since it defaulted on its debt obligations two years ago. It is in the midst of a restructuring that includes selling off assets to avoid defaulting on $340 billion in debt, and the company has said its chairman Hui Ka Yan is facing “mandatory measures in accordance with the law.” His status is unclear.

Evergrande New Energy Vehicle saw its shares tumble nearly 20% last week after it said a deal to sell shares to Dubai-based NWTN Motors had lapsed. The brief announcement of Liu’s detention on “suspicion of illegal crimes” made no mention of that or other details.

The company has delayed its plans for beginning manufacturing after running into difficulties in attracting enough funding.

Great Wall opening a dealership in the middle of Westgate shopping area. It covers a wide catchment.

I see the Ora EV has a seven year warranty + eight years unlimited km on the battery. Do they bring Wey P8 PHEV or similar to NZ?

MG for a short time were showing cars in malls. It's a great strategy for an up and coming brand with name recognition. If MG had a dealership in Westgate I'd probably be driving an MG before now, and probably the PHEV. Unfortunately we frequently exceed the electric only range and I'd have to do the numbers carefully after the govts very silly approach to PHEV.

Should note the that presenter is USA based, where the predominant battery chemistry is NMC.

A decent chunk of NZ EV's are LFP. This chemistry has inferior energy density, but is both cheap and is very degradation resistant. LFP is so durable it is generally considered that it is fine to leave at 100%. Example of cars in NZ with LFP batteries:

  • All BYD's
  • China Built RWD model 3 (the last couple of years of delivery
  • Model RWD model Y
  • Post facelift standard range MG ZS EV
  • Standard range MG4
  • Standard Range GWM Ora

It goes beyond the RHD thing. There are plenty of RHD crying out for models that were oversupplied in the USA.

Notably Canada has had long wait times for EV, which were abundant in the USA. (due to regulations it is not typically viable for a Canada resident to buy a car in the USA and drive it home).

A lot of this is market shaping.

  • In the case of the F-150 (in general, not just the lightning), I strongly suspect ford want's people to buy the Thai built ranger instead. Likewise with smaller ford Maverick. While popular the thai built utes are typically fairly basic and cheap to build compered to what north America gets.
  • Toyota doesn't sell the 2WD Fortuner here as they want to encourage people who don't want low range 4x4 into the highlander or Rav4 instead.
  • Lexus doesn't sell the GX (flashed up prado here), to feed those potential buyers to the LX

On the F-150 lighting, they weigh over 3,000 empty, so the GVM will trip over our 3,500kg light vehicle limit. This means 6 monthly COF's, certified towbars, and 90km/h max speed limits, which would seriously kill market appeal.

Good points. On Auckland motorways I routinely see large truck heavy vehicles doing 100kmh. Similar on regional motorways. Imo this isn't enforced, much. I don't know why.
