Scott3:
A decent chunk of NZ EV's are LFP. This chemistry has inferior energy density, but is both cheap and is very degradation resistant.
It also has no cobalt, which is nice when the utebros do the whole 'herpderp child labour!' thing.

We hardly hear the utebros/petrosexuals whine about Russian or Saudi oil.

Yes, that's the second part of my response. "Oh, to the extent that that's still true, neither of my cars have any cobalt in their batteries. But every time you fill up your car, you're putting money in the pocket of Mohammad bin Salman, who gets his henchmen to cut people alive with a bone saw."

Wonder what sort of gotcha the utebro petrosexuals will try to pull on sodium battery vehicles? I'm guessing, "Hey s*yb*y! Bring me the saltshaker!"

In case its of interest.
RNZ had an explanation on how much of the graphite for anode of your battery is made.
About 50% of battery by weight? (Sounds high)
Take oil from bottom of the refining column and bake for months at 3000Deg.
So oil and lots of energy.
There is natural mined graphite though impurities might make it less preferred.
NZ company has a process based on wood to biochar, to graphite.
Its a bit lower temperature so less energy input, though purity required means you need quality wood.

What's with the Z chargers?
Today I called into Z Stratford on the way home from a return trip to Wanganui more to test the new fob than anything as we had sufficient range to get home. Same failure to charge as at Te Kuiti, and another guy with an MG was experiencing the same issue. The charger got to the requesting communication with our Polestar but crashed before the charge started.
I offered to charge the MG at our home's 7kW EVSE as we were closer than New Plymouth where the MG was headed so that he could make it home as he didn't have enough SoC to make it to NP. He had been into the station but the staff there couldn't help and complained that communication from Z on the chargers that they were receiving requests for help on was lacking.
Before we reached home the MG guy contacted us to say that he had got through to Z and they had rebooted their unit/s which had rectified the problem.
Is this a common situation for Z's chargers or have I just been unlucky both times I've tried to use them?
(Copied from my Reddit post which seems to be getting quite a few similar issues being reported).

I used the Stratford ones about three times over the Christmas holidays no issue. Also used one of the ones at the Bombays that, at the time, actually had a sign up saying it wasn't open yet - but it worked fine anyway.
But I have had issues getting an MG to start charging, in general. The first MG we had - the one that eventually was simply replaced with a new car - was notorious for it. The current one I've only had one anxious moment which was at Tikipunga on one of the new Tritium ones (but had used that exact same one twice before no problems).

HarmLessSolutions: What's with the Z chargers?
I can only comment on the Stratford one. Have taken a couple of trips to Taranaki in the last couple of months from Kapiti. Have stopped in at Stratford three times (with our EV6) and it has worked flawlessly each time. Nice to have at least a 175kW charger to make use of rather than the 50kW ones!! Note that I have used the app each time, scanning the QR code. not a fob. Maybe they were just having a bad day :-)
Well, the Model 3 got smashed last night from behind, crumpling the left rear corner panel, lights & charging port, bending the boot a little, totaling the bumper, and whatever the thing is that looks a bit like a bellows that's under the bumper. Possible the left rear door is a little bent as well, but that just might be where the rear panel is all shoved up against it.
Not a huge fan of the idea the new Model 3 is even more minimalist than the 2022, which is the most minimalist I could tolerate so assuming they don't fix it I probably won't buy another Tesla. I've had the BYD Seal suggested but I'd have to go to the top trim otherwise I would have less grunt than the Tesla did and ... well let's face it, sometimes I like to press the pedal down just to accelerate to 100 a bit faster. That would leave me about $20K short though (and **** you very much Luxon for that not being $12K).
Annoyingly, I just paid for next year's insurance up front so I'll have to remember to get that refunded if they do write off. Even more annoyingly, 20,000km earlier it would probably have been an automatic replacement...

Tesla Model Y not an option?
Still has wiper stalks etc.
I gather we are now getting the slightly enhanced chinese 'upgrade' - though not sure how you check on that though.

That sucks 😔
Have you given the new Model 3 a test drive?

Nah, not yet. I imagine it'll be best part of a week before they even touch it (nervousness about banged up EV batteries), so I don't expect to hear for a while. My wife thinks repair but to fix the rear quarter from that condition would be very impressive indeed.

Yeah with crumple zones and other safety mechanisms in modern cars, even when the damage looks small on the outside there can be enough damage underneath that it's not really feasible to repair.
Should it go that way, I would recommend giving the new one a test drive before you eliminate it as an option. It's really "only" the indicators that are the biggest reduction and while I think they will be annoying to begin with, I also think they're the sort of thing your muscle memory adapts to. This UK EV channel review kind of indicates (heh) as much - NZs roundabout designs tend to be more practical than the UK as well. The biggest issue might be switching between cars that do have stalks - a bit like when you have two cars with the wiper controls on opposite sides
