The Bathurst lap record for closed wheel car was recently taken by an E-Transit van. That should put a cat among the pigeons for the V8 supercar fraternity. If that can be done by a van what could a more aerodynamic performance EV be capable of?

Broke 300km/h down Conrod Straight. Pretty wild for a van!

Very very impressive!

it weighs more too as well! (about 465kg more) albeit it does have over three times the Hp (600ish vs 2000ish) and twice as much Torque  (1,800ishNm vs 881ishNm)

I would be very worried if it didn't beat them with those numbers lol.

It would be amazing to see this kind of battery pack, and motors in a Gen3 body to get a grasp of how much quicker it can be!

My bad @jarledb, what I meant by "not gone to Norway" was "not take a return flight to Norway". My understanding is that trip was about the equivalent of driving an ICE about 20,000 km. So the environmental benefits of my all EV home for 2023 were wiped out with a trip to Norway.

But yes the EV uptake in Norway is impressive. On 40 km 30 minute drive from Gardermoen to Oslo city centre I saw more model S cars than in a year in Christchurch. An example for the rest of the world, but maybe there're other ways of achieving the same savings in carbon emissions in NZ. Anyone for staycations and abandoning overseas travel? ;p

Why yes, there are other ways. According to the vegans, you can give up meat once or twice a week and have the same effect on your carbon footprint as giving up your ICE car.

I really don't think that it will, in the same way that Top Fuel drag fans aren't concerned about an EV drag car going faster.

The technical endeavour is fascinating to watch, and a more aerodynamic EV may be able to beat the unofficial F1 laptime, or do a 1/4 mile faster, but then V8 supercars are about all five senses, and Top Fuel even more so. Petrol heads go to the drags or Bathurst to have their ears assaulted, their internal organs vibrated and to choke on nitromethane fumes. I can't imagine sitting on the hill watching silent cars wizz past and enjoying it to be honest, and I think EVs are great.

I did have a chuckle reading that it took a local UteBro shop to get the EV steering sorted so it could make the lap record.

At one point the Ford Transit was the "most wanted van" in Britain for its popularity among bank robbers:

As far back as 1972, a Scotland Yard spokesman famously said, “Ford Transits are used in 95 per cent of bank raids.” It’s pretty clear the thin blue line had been nobbled by Ford’s ever-efficient spin machine, because he went on: “With the performance of a car, and space for 1.75 tonnes of loot, the Transit is proving to be the perfect getaway vehicle.”

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

What @Ge0rge just said is spot on.

My next car for transport will be an EV purely for running costs.

I have driven many an EV, teslas, BYDs, Kias, been in the original fast Model S (is it the 100D?) but none of them have given me the enjoyment of actually driving.

They all just feel lifeless in comparison even to a slow ICE, no doubt almost all of them (the evs) would be faster in a straight line to 100kph but for me I still want all the nonsense of an ICE.

I do wonder what it would be like having an EV with a gear box tho.....

Will it be cheaper though in terms of running costs, when electricity prices could rise a lot in the future. Plus then you have got road user charges. If you have your own generation, then that is another matter. The costs saving with an ICE will pay for a lot of fuel, and  can be more engaging to drive than an EV, even if i may not have the straight line acceleration.

It a custom racing car, styled to be visually similar to the Electric version of the Transit Custom Van (which is a size down from the E-Transit).

Even the term "Van" might be pushing it, given the areo treatment.

The clean silent power of an EV does it for me. Acceleration has always been a rush for me and not so much the noise of an ICE and the instant torque of an EV provides effortless power that few other vehicles are capable of. The fact that EV motoring is so cheap in terms of everyday per kilometre costs is just an added bonus with solar guaranteeing it will stay that way.

I've had experience in the past of fast motorcycles and cars but these days I'm not so bothered with putting the extra effort into driving for entertainment and am more than happy for the intelligence of an EV to remove the stress and effort from open road, and urban, motoring. Adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam dipping and other high tech features suit me just fine and the garage without the stink of hydrocarbons is more than welcome, or it will be once my chainsaw joins the rest of our power tools in becoming battery powered.

I watched some of the Goodwood Festival of Speed a couple of years back where they had a class for EV open wheelers. It was like watching full size scalextric models. Not all that exciting I'm afraid. They weren't exactly silent, the noise was just scaled up from the scalextric models.
