"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. So follow on question, given we have looked into the green loan, and it could be worth spending more, is there anything i should be looking at sub $35k other than a leaf? There are a couple of MG ZS EV's popping up in searches.
Needs to be from a dealer though is the only catch with the loan.
They have similar range to the 40Kw leaf, but looking at $6-10k more. Is it worth it? they would be 2-3 years newer than a leaf.
@Jase2985 I've seen some ex-demo GWM Ora's for around $35k. Super nice cars to drive: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/gwm/ora/listing/4403807490
They've also got LFP batteries so battery longevity is also better than a leaf.

Are you sure about the battery chemistry? I thought they were NMC.

Standard range is LFP. Extended range is NMC. I test drove the Standard Range about a month ago and really liked it.

If you're spending that sort of money I wouldn't get a leaf. The drivetrain and battery design is really out of date now, the big thing being lack of active thermal management in the battery which means they degrade so much faster.

I dont want to spend that money, but i will if it can be justified. We have a second car that can do longer trips.
Do you have any suggestions of what to look at?

Thanks for that but unfortunately myself and the other half think they are pretty damn ugly, each to their own i guess.

sub 25k there is not much except leafs, going higher there is, but haven't seen a compelling reason to go higher. Are those vehicles worth the extra 5-10k? are you getting a lot more range or features?

Range and features wise they are probably comparable, it's more that the leaf is pretty much the first mainstream EV, was very good in its time but with the benefit of hindsight things like active battery thermal management were pretty important and incorporated into most EVs since.
Using the i3 as a comparison, drivetrain tech wise it's well ahead of the leaf, but it's a smaller car. Battery degredation with age seems to be better than the leaf (but as with any used EV, check what the actual battery health is before buying). Same basic drivetrain is also used in the mini.
A more modern/newer car is generally going to be better, have more useful life but also be more expensive to buy.
Ultimately though, buying a car doesn't just come down to one factor - but the technology in a leaf is a negative when compared to most others. Only you can weigh up the rest though - range/space/features etc.
I've linked to Bjorn Nyland's Youtube channel before, but it's a good source of info on EVs, and he's also recently been looking at tests of older cars of battery degredation etc. All his tests are in a spreadsheet to read too.

Is that the same Ioniq that is floating around on YT with a CAD $60,000 battery replacement bill?!
Assuming that's in Canada, I wouldn't think the OP would be looking at importing a broken one from the other side of the world.

i dunno man it would be cheap as

I think the Hyundai IONIQ's as well as the Kona EV's are pretty underrated personally. Great range, great efficacy and they last well in the battery health department too. I don't know if you're on Facebook but the NZ EV Owners group is pretty good for advise too (well, there is a little bit of an overzealous admin on there currently, but generally they're good).
This listing jumped out at me with being a pretty good deal: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/hyundai/ioniq/listing/4418446991
But generally you can get 2017/18 "Classic" IONIQ's for cheap too and I'd personally go with them over a Leaf any day. The Leaf is good if you're on a budget but it has the limitations that gave EV's after it a somewhat bad name especially around the battery eventually cooking itself if you do a whole lot of fast charging.
Also dependent on your total budget I do sometimes see some Tesla Model 3's come up for sale from the $35-45k mark but the advantage of a Tesla is the supercharging network which while opened up for other EV's, the supercharging network will always be cheaper to use in a Tesla but you get the advantage of everything else too. There is a Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/teslabuysellnz and right now I do see a Model 3 going for $38k (2019 model) but keep an eye out if that interests you too.
