This listing jumped out at me with being a pretty good deal: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/hyundai/ioniq/listing/4418446991

Totally agree I'd elect for an Ioniq or Kona over a Leaf (and I say that as an ex-owner of a Leaf!), but it's worth noting that as you inch towards $35k, MG4s become an option, eg here's one for $35k: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/mg/4/listing/4618670370.

These will be no more than six months old and so will have most of their (long) warranty remaining. Interior space in these is, I reckon, better than the Ioniq or Kona (not surprising given it's an EV platform), if that's an important factor.

It's good to see that NZ charging networks are starting to get rid of the need to use fobs and apps. The We.EV network now supports Plug and Charge after you set it up the first time you use one of their chargers from yesterday. Once you've done that, you just plug the car in and it should start charging like a Tesla does at a Supercharger. Jump Charging in the South Island is working to get Paywave terminals working on their new network too.

It surprises me that the likes of BP and Z have not got paywave working on their chargers, considering they have done this with their petrol pumps.

@Jase2985: sub 25k there is not much except leafs, going higher there is, but haven't seen a compelling reason to go higher. Are those vehicles worth the extra 5-10k? are you getting a lot more range or features?

I think the Hyundai IONIQ's as well as the Kona EV's are pretty underrated personally. Great range, great efficacy and they last well in the battery health department too. I don't know if you're on Facebook but the NZ EV Owners group is pretty good for advise too (well, there is a little bit of an overzealous admin on there currently, but generally they're good).

Seem to be some modern Leaf's at good prices; eg, 2022, 10,200km for just under $28k https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/nissan/leaf/listing/4562294823

Only 4/5 safety rating though (according to the adv)?  Is the battery likely to be any better than in the older models?

vs 2021 model Ionic, 5380 km on clock for $35,990 https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/hyundai/ioniq/listing/4591579869

Slightly better range and presumably fewer battery concerns? And 5/5 safety rating.  Possibly a bit sluggish though?

Personally would prefer something with a longer range than these ...

Still pretty much the same battery tech in the gen 2, AFAIK; it's certainly still not got active cooling. It would be interesting to see what the Flip the Fleet data indicates re battery degradation cf gen 1.

It's also worth noting that any safety rating would be that which applied at the time, and I assume that model got tested quite some time back.

Personally, I'd still be looking elsewhere (once bitten, twice shy for sure) - only another $7k for that basically new MG4 I linked to above. Similar size (larger usable interior; smaller boot but with easier access); safer; long warranty...). Though the base MG4 is missing some of the nice things most Leafs come with (eg, heated steering wheel and seats).

Isuzu DMax Ute EV with 1 ton load and 3.5 ton towing equal to fossil model - heading for Norway and Australia. NZ is rumoured.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Finally got an email telling me that I have to buy RUCs before May 31st. I guess it makes sense to leave it to the end of may to actually buy any of them.

That seems to be the popular strategy. Expect the NZTA system to be severely tested as May ends I guess.

So what time on the 31st do we all hit the buy button and melt the NZTA server :)

I mean I'm fine with RUCs with but I also plan to stress test the NZTA system... It's my civic duty to ensure they can handle the load.

With May 31 being a Friday, I'm sure a lot of people will be happy to stay up until the last minute in order to put an application through.

For those prices you can get 62kWh Leaf, older than those linked, but faster and bigger range. I imagine all of the 62kWh Leaf come with the 160kW motor, but I haven't looked too deep. Silly power really, so tyres will be even more of a consumable if you like to plant it. Decent range though. How much range do you really need? If it's frequently a long range trip needed then sweet. But if it's more of a rare long range trip, I would think a 40kWh Leaf would do the trick.

I personally wouldn't buy MG4 etc because they aren't really tested yet. Resale of any EV isn't going to be great, but I can't imagine MG4 will age nicely, so unless you plan to keep the next car forever, it could be a consideration. Just my opinion though. They are cheaper than other options because they are cheaply built.

Agre, why aren't they all just tap and go? Maybe some sort of issue with needing to issue a hold on funds?

In the meantime, I've added my ChargeNet fob's serial number to the BP and Z apps so I can use the one fob for all three brands chargers.

There are ~950K light diesels currently in the fleet that are already registered a purchasing RUC, adding 100K EVs isn't likely to cause that big a capacity problem

I can kind of understand why ChargeNet hasn't implemented it yet as they're still a relatively small company starting out. However, Z and BP are multi-billion dollar companies that have the weight, funding and experience behind them to make paywave work on their chargers. To me it seems that they either think that EV drivers love dealing with a mess of fobs and apps or they're not fully committed to their charging networks yet.

Although it was just a joke, the inference was that if everyone who regos their EV on the 31st  at the same time, lookout servers. Of course this wont happen, but I would expect there will be a lot more traffic on that day than the 950 Diesel RUCs (which we also have) all spread through the year.
