Obraik: When I last looked the other month, around 65% of all EVs in NZ use CCS2, so it makes sense that CCS2 chargers are being prioritised

Some degree of bias to CCS2 is justified, but the above image shows 75% of plugs, and 96% of kW capacity allocated to CCS2, both numbers are well above the CCS2 market share. (even using the PHEV exclusive numbers).

Measly 4% of kW capacity to serve roughly 1/3rd of the NZ ev fleet (+ any outlander PHEV's that utilize fast charging).

Are there any new cars sold with Chademo connectors?

Or, is the 35% of cars in the fleet with Chademo currently mostly old Nissan Leafs, a lot of which charge at home and don't travel further than 40km from home? (I know, on Waiheke Island, where there must be the highest proportion of Leafs in the country, none of them are doing massive road trips).

It makes sense that new charging capacity is CCS2 if most of new EVs sold are CCS2.

leafs are going to be around for a long while yet so building new infrastructure still needs to take that in to consideration.

My 40kW leaf only has 13,000km on it and I would expect to be driving it for at least 10 years before upgrading.

That's true, public charging should include the ability to charge all types of vehicles, but I'd think (hope) that ChargeNet/Z/BP et al have done their homework to match Supply with Demand.

Do you use public charging for your Leaf?

I'd be interested to know how much (as a percentage of all charging) people use Public vs Private (at home) charging. Then I'd like to know as a percentage how many Leafs (especially the many many 24-30kWh models) use public charging.

I would easily do 98-99% of my charging at home, I do about 6-700kms a week (64kWh MG4).

I know this isn't aimed at me, but to provide an example: in six years of owning a G1 Leaf we used a fast charger once. I don't think such infrequent use is unusual, especially for older Leafs that simply don't have the range to be used far from home (without a lot of hassle).

That said, there are still a decent number of Leaf owners - primarily those with the larger battery G1 and especially G2 - who do travel further and need to use public charging; I'd agree it's important that these guys aren't left by the wayside. The e+ model has a 59kwh battery - larger than my wife's MG4 - and charging that at 25kw is going to be a frustrating and slow experience!

I have the ability to charge at home, and have a EVSE installed, but if we were to do roadtrips, tauranga, taupo etc then yes we would be using public chargers.

Recently went to pick our kids up from their trip with their grandparents and charged in Kaiwaka.

So while 95% of my charging will be at home, I still want the ability to go away on a longer trip in my car and to be able to charge it fast.

In our case our 30kW Leaf is our secondary vehicle with our Polestar2 doing the longer journeys. The 30kW Leaf has yet to use a public charger in the 10 months we've owned it and is unlikely to in the foreseeable future. The 24kWh 2012 Leaf we previously had used public charging about 3 or 4 times in the 9 years we owned it and that was initially to investigate New Plymouth's newly installed facility and beyond that on the odd occasion when we had unplanned driving and needed a top up to get the car back to our rural home as its battery SoH declined.

From the amount of early model Leafs that inhabit New Plymouth now I suspect very few of them would see open road trips that require public charging and virtually all of them will be home charging.

what do you define as real market prices?

what you see on those sites from non dealers are the real market prices. you do have the ability to negotiate with them.

One option is to look wider - we sold our Leaf (with a 100km range) to someone from Hamilton, who paid to have it freighted from Palmerston North.

Looks like they've been developed but don't appear to be cheap, and I'm not sure whether I'd be buying such an expensive item from AE: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006913591020.html

https://autonlaturit.com/en/products/ccs-chademo-adapteri

the biggest issue is the different communication languages used, CCS uses PWM over the charging cables, Chademo uses CAN bus over specific communication cables.
